Bangkok, Thailand | September 17, 2026 – Lloyd’s Register (LR) has formally issued a Factual Statement confirming that Daphne Technology’s PureMetrics™ continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) is suitable for directly monitoring selected greenhouse gas (GHG) and pollutant emissions from marine diesel engines onboard ships.
The official presentation of the Factual Statement took place during the ongoing Gastech 2026 conference in Bangkok, highlighting a major step forward in independent validation for marine emissions reporting technologies.
Comprehensive Design Appraisal and Scope
The independent assessment involved rigorous documentation review and onboard demonstration testing, culminating in an LR Design Appraisal of the PureMetrics™ system architecture and its underlying emissions calculation methodology.
Unlike a vessel-specific approval, the appraisal covers the system’s generic design, establishing a robust technical foundation that shipowners and operators can leverage for future ship-specific classification and regulatory certification processes.
According to the appraisal, PureMetrics™ is engineered to monitor a broad spectrum of emissions, including:
- Greenhouse Gases: Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4).
- Regulated Pollutants: Carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2).
The system is optimized for deployment across traditional marine diesel engines as well as modern dual-fuel engines.
Regulatory Alignment: IMO, EU MRV, and MEPC.416(84)
LR evaluated the monitoring technology against key international and regional regulatory frameworks, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, EU MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) rules, and the NOx Technical Code.
Significantly, the Factual Statement references IMO Resolution MEPC.416(84), the first dedicated IMO guidelines governing continuous emissions monitoring systems for marine diesel engines, which was recently adopted at the IMO’s 84th MEPC session in 2026.
This validation comes at a critical time for shipowners as compliance tracking intensifies. Alongside CO2, the capability to accurately quantify methane (CH4) is vital, as methane emissions fall squarely under EU MRV reporting requirements and are fully integrated into the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) starting in 2026.
