France | March 19, 2026 – In a landmark move for maritime decarbonization transparency, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has completed the independent verification of methane (CH₄) emissions across four of Brittany Ferries LNG-fueled vessels.
The verification, conducted in close coordination with French maritime authorities, marks a pivotal shift from regulatory guesswork to empirical precision. By documenting actual “methane slip” under real-world operating conditions, the French ferry operator can now bypass conservative default emission factors in favor of verified, measured data for EU MRV and FuelEU Maritime compliance.
Shifting the Regulatory Needle
Current European and International Maritime Organization (IMO) frameworks often rely on default methane slip values, sometimes as high as 3.1%. However, BV’s rigorous monitoring campaign suggests these benchmarks may significantly overstate the environmental impact of modern LNG engines.
The verification covered four key vessels in the Brittany Ferries fleet:
- Salamanca
- Santoña
- Saint-Malo
- Guillaume de Normandie
On the Salamanca, the study spanned a twelve-month monitoring period across the Rosslare–Bilbao and Rosslare–Cherbourg routes. The resulting data, published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, confirms that the actual annual methane slip rate is substantially lower than standard regulatory assumptions.
The Path to Verified Performance
To move beyond default values, Brittany Ferries and BV navigated a complex technical and administrative process mandated by IMO Resolution MEPC.402(83). This required the development of a “Methane Emissions Documentation Package” for each engine, comprising:
- Methane Emissions File: Detailed technical specifications for each relevant engine.
- Methane Record Book: A continuous log of emissions-related data.
- Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) Procedure: The methodology used to correlate engine performance with emissions for FuelEU Maritime reporting.
Following BV’s review, the French Flag Administration approved the files and issued a Form of Statement confirming the engine-weighted verified values. This allows Brittany Ferries to report its actual environmental footprint, directly influencing its liability under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
