Burando Energies B30 Biofuel VLSFO Bunkering Teekay Tankers

In a significant step toward decarbonising the maritime fuel supply chain, Burando Energies has successfully delivered a bespoke blend of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) containing 30% ISCC Certified FAME Residue to Teekay Tankers at the Port of Amsterdam. This operation marks a critical milestone in advancing scalable, lower-carbon marine fuels without compromising on engine performance or fuel quality.

The delivery, conducted through a coordinated bunkering operation, highlights the rising demand for sustainable and cost-effective fuel alternatives in the shipping industry. By blending its high-quality VLSFO with a renewable, second-generation bio-component, Burando Energies continues to provide practical and commercially viable solutions aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonisation objectives.

“We are proud to support Teekay Tankers in taking concrete steps toward sustainable operations,” said Nick de Haan, Head of Decarbonisation Strategies at Burando Energies. “This delivery showcases our ability to meet the evolving fuel demands of the global shipping industry with innovative, lower-carbon solutions that are also commercially viable.”

What is FAME Residue?

FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) Residue is a renewable by-product derived from waste oils and residual feedstocks used in biodiesel production. As a second-generation bio-component, it represents a more circular and economical option compared to conventional biofuels. With a significantly lower carbon footprint, FAME Residue enables shipowners to cut greenhouse gas emissions without overhauling their vessel engines or supply chains.

Burando Energies has undertaken extensive testing and quality assurance to secure a consistent and high-grade FAME Residue stream. This bio-component blends seamlessly with traditional VLSFO, creating a drop-in fuel that supports operational efficiency, fuel flexibility, and long-term environmental compliance.

Long-Term Partnership with Teekay Tankers

This delivery is the latest result of a long-standing collaboration between Burando Energies and Teekay Tankers, one of the world’s leading oil transportation companies. The two companies have previously worked together to pioneer biofuel deliveries in the Port of Amsterdam.

“Teekay Tankers has partnered with Burando for many years and has worked with us on the first FAME Residue biofuel delivery in Amsterdam,” said Mads Bjornebye, Manager Bunker Services at Teekay Tankers. “Burando coordinated closely with both our Technical and Commercial teams to ensure a smooth delivery.”

This successful operation underscores the practical potential of renewable marine fuels to deliver immediate emissions reductions, while also forming part of broader, longer-term decarbonisation strategies across the shipping sector.

Supporting the Marine Energy Transition

Burando Energies continues to position itself at the forefront of the maritime energy transition through investments in fuel innovation, flexible bunkering infrastructure, and sustainable logistics. The company’s ongoing focus is to support shipowners in navigating the complex regulatory landscape while delivering scalable solutions that meet both environmental and operational targets.

This delivery to Teekay Tankers reflects Burando’s mission to reshape the future of marine fuels with solutions that balance sustainability, reliability, and economic performance.
