BlackCoral Energy and Biofuel Express team up to supply sustainable marine fuels across Northern Europe, supporting decarbonization and FuelEU Maritime compliance.
Randers, Denmark – June 2, 2025 — In a strategic move aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of the maritime sector, BlackCoral Energy, a leading bunker supplier and marine fuel trader, has announced a joint venture with Biofuel Express, a prominent provider of renewable fuels for land transport. This partnership is set to deliver sustainable biofuel bunkering solutions across key Northern European ports, positioning both companies at the forefront of the maritime energy transition.
The collaboration will initially cover ports in Denmark, southern Norway, southern Sweden, northern Germany, and selected additional European locations, establishing a regional network for the physical supply of high-performance renewable marine fuels.

A Synergistic Alliance for Maritime Decarbonization
The joint venture merges BlackCoral Energy’s strong market presence and logistics capabilities in the marine fuel industry with Biofuel Express’s deep expertise in renewable fuel technologies. The companies will supply two primary biofuels:
- HVO100 Renewable Diesel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and
- B100 Biodiesel RME Premium (Rapeseed Methyl Ester).
Both fuels are drop-in compatible, meaning they can be used in existing marine engines without modifications. These biofuels offer significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions compared to conventional marine fuels. Specifically, HVO100 offers up to 90% CO₂ savings, while B100 offers up to 70%, both benchmarked against standard Marine Gas Oil (MGO 0.1%).
Christoph Riecken, Managing Partner at BlackCoral Energy, emphasized the importance of the joint venture:
“This joint venture strengthens both our businesses and, more importantly, brings added value to our customers. Our marine industry knowledge, paired with Biofuel Express’s biofuel capabilities, creates a powerful offering for ship owners preparing for 2025 FuelEU Maritime requirements.”
FuelEU Maritime Compliance and Transparency
In alignment with upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulations—which introduce a strict GHG intensity limit of 89.3368 gCO₂e/MJ in 2025—the joint venture is also providing full Proof of Sustainability (PoS) documentation with each delivery. These documents are critical for regulatory reporting and verifying emissions reductions.
In addition to fuel delivery, the venture offers a comprehensive suite of GHG emissions tracking and advisory services, enabling shipowners and operators to:
- Monitor emissions on a per-ship or fleet-wide basis,
- Optimize port-specific fuel selection,
- Plan cost-effective, regulation-compliant bunkering strategies throughout the year.
Clemen Rasmussen, Partner and Board Member at Biofuel Express, highlighted the venture’s role in supporting maritime decarbonization strategies:
“Thanks to continuous GHG monitoring and advisory services, we help customers plan which fuels to use, in which ports, and at what time—ensuring compliance with the 2025 FuelEU Maritime limit while keeping costs under control.”
Scalable Supply with Future-Ready Logistics
The initial supply chain will rely on truck-based deliveries, with barge supply and blended marine fuels (e.g., MGO/HVO or VLSFO/B100 blends) expected to follow soon. The partners are preparing to scale their operations as demand grows and regulatory pressure mounts.
This initiative reflects a growing industry trend toward drop-in biofuels—sustainable fuel alternatives that integrate seamlessly with current marine infrastructure and vessels. This approach allows ship operators to transition to greener operations without compromising performance, engine compatibility, or operational reliability.
Looking Ahead
With mounting pressure on the maritime sector to decarbonize and comply with upcoming EU regulations, the BlackCoral Energy and Biofuel Express joint venture represents a timely and strategic step forward. By offering practical, scalable, and regulation-ready fuel solutions, the partnership is poised to become a key player in the sustainable bunkering space in Europe.
