Barents NaturGass begins high-speed LNG bunkering for Havila Kystruten in Hammerfest using a new DSB-approved simultaneous two-truck-to-ship delivery system.

Hammerfest, Norway | February 4, 2026 – In a major development for Arctic maritime logistics, Barents NaturGass AS has officially commenced LNG bunkering operations for the Norwegian coastal cruise line Havila Kystruten. The first operation took place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Hammerfest city quay, marking a milestone in high-speed, multi-truck refueling.

The operation was made possible following eleventh-hour regulatory clearance from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB), which approved Barents NaturGass’s innovative “simultaneous two-truck-to-ship” bunkering design just days before the first vessel arrived.

Efficiency at the Arctic Edge

The newly approved procedure allows two LNG semi-trailers to discharge fuel into a vessel’s tanks simultaneously. This dual-feed system is designed to significantly reduce “time alongside,” allowing Havila Voyages’ high-tech coastal ships, which rely on a combination of LNG and massive battery packs, to maintain their tight schedules along the Bergen-Kirkenes route.

The first bunkering operation was uneventful, just as expected,” the company stated. “Over the next few operations, we will focus on streamlining the process to reduce bunkering time and further improve procedures.”

Barents NaturGass emphasized that liquid methane remains the “fuel of both the present and the future,” highlighting the seamless transition between conventional LNG and Liquefied Biogas (LBG), the latter of which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90%.

Infrastructure: Europe’s Largest LNG Bunkering Hub

Barents NaturGass operates a sophisticated supply chain tailored for the harsh conditions of Northern Scandinavia:

  • Hammerfest Facility: Europe’s largest dedicated LNG bunkering station, featuring 1,250 m³ of storage and a high-speed pump capacity of 90 tons/hour.
  • Regional Network: Supplemented by facilities in Lødingen (250 m³) and Moskenes (150 m³).
  • Technical Safety: All operations utilize vacuum-insulated pipes and “Break Away” connectors with dry-breaking valves, ensuring leak-free transfers even in extreme weather or significant ship movement.

A European Energy Powerhouse

Barents NaturGass is a key subsidiary within a dominant European LNG alliance. As part of a group including Broadview Energy Solutions (Netherlands) and Molgas Energia (Spain), the company provides a “one-stop-shop” for industrial and maritime energy needs across the continent.

By leveraging the Snøhvit gas field via the Equinor terminal at Melkøya, Barents NaturGass ensures a stable, local supply chain for the growing fleet of dual-fuel vessels in the Barents Sea.
