The partnership focuses on advancing system architecture, redundancy, and battery integration while establishing foundational technical guidance for the technology. Bangkok | September 14, 2026 – Marking a major step forward in low-emission marine engineering, Lloyd’s Register (LR) has joined forces with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to pioneer a new generation of hybrid electric LNG carriers.
The partners formalized their collaboration by signing an Approval in Principle (AiP) at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, targeting the advanced design of a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier driven by an innovative hybrid electric propulsion system.
Strengthening System Architecture and Battery Integration
As global shipping accelerates its search for higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions, hybrid electric propulsion is emerging as a critical technological pillar. Under the newly signed AiP framework, the consortium will concentrate on rigorous design and safety verification for the large-scale LNG carrier.
Key technical focal points of the project include:
- Optimized System Architecture: Refining power distribution to maximize operational efficiency across varying cargo and transit loads.
- Redundancy Philosophy: Ensuring maximum reliability and fault tolerance for complex electrical setups.
- Battery Integration: Successfully scaling energy storage systems to support heavy propulsion demands.
Beyond the immediate vessel design, the initiative aims to develop foundational technical guidance and regulatory frameworks for hybrid electric technology, paving the way for wider market adoption. Shaping the Future of Electric Shipping
Industry leaders at Gastech 2026 emphasized that scaling electric propulsion to large commercial gas carriers requires close, early-stage alignment between classification societies and master builders.
“Hybrid electric propulsion has clear potential to support efficiency gains and emissions reduction, but its application at this scale requires a robust approach to design and safety. From the shipbuilder’s standpoint, the project serves as a critical stepping stone for future eco-friendly fleet developments.
“HD HHI has proactively adopted eco-friendly technologies to comply with environmental regulations. Through this recent project, we were able to identify the various advantages and disadvantages of applying an advanced electric propulsion system. Building upon these insights, we expect this experience to serve as a valuable foundation for developing and implementing more efficient propulsion systems in the future,” noted Hongryeul Ryu, Executive Vice President & CTO at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
