Nobian has secured RFNBO certification for green hydrogen production at its Frankfurt site, expanding its portfolio of certified low-carbon hydrogen across Europe. The move strengthens supply of traceable renewable hydrogen and supports EU industrial decarbonisation targets.
Frankfurt | April 8, 2026 – Nobian has strengthened its renewable hydrogen strategy with the certification of green hydrogen production at its Frankfurt site under the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) framework, marking another step in the company’s expanding low-carbon chemicals portfolio across Europe.
The certification confirms that hydrogen produced at the Frankfurt chlor-alkali electrolysis facility meets the European Union’s strict sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction requirements under the ISCC EU RFNBO standard, enabling its use in regulated and voluntary decarbonisation markets.
Expanding Certified Green Hydrogen Production
With the addition of Frankfurt, Nobian now operates multiple RFNBO-certified hydrogen production sites, building on earlier certification achieved at its Rotterdam facility.
At the Frankfurt site, the company expects to supply up to 6,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, produced via chlor-alkali electrolysis powered entirely by renewable electricity. The expansion is part of Nobian’s broader strategy to scale up certified, traceable low-carbon molecules across its European operations.
What RFNBO Certification Means
RFNBO certification under the ISCC EU framework is among the most stringent sustainability standards in the European hydrogen market. It requires producers to demonstrate:
- Full traceability of renewable electricity used in production
- Compliance with strict lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions thresholds
- Transparent documentation across the entire value chain
For customers, this ensures that the hydrogen they purchase can be reliably classified as renewable under EU regulatory definitions, supporting compliance with industrial decarbonisation targets and fuel transition policies.
Strengthening Europe’s Green Hydrogen Supply Chain
The Frankfurt certification strengthens Nobian’s ability to supply certified hydrogen to industrial customers across sectors including chemicals, refining, mobility, and energy-intensive manufacturing.
The company said the development supports European Union targets requiring a growing share of renewable hydrogen in industrial energy consumption by 2030, positioning RFNBO-certified products as a key enabler of future compliance and carbon reduction strategies.
By integrating production sites in both Germany and the Netherlands, Nobian is building a cross-border hydrogen network aimed at supporting the emergence of a scalable European hydrogen ecosystem.

According to Nobian, the RFNBO expansion is part of a long-term strategy to accelerate the transition toward low-carbon chemical production and strengthen its position in the certified hydrogen market.
