Azane Fuel Solutions is advancing three ENOVA-backed ammonia bunkering terminals in Florø, Stavanger, and Mongstad, targeting operations by 2029. The projects aim to establish Norway’s first ammonia bunkering network, supporting the transition to zero-emission shipping. Backed by major maritime and energy players, the initiative signals growing momentum behind ammonia as a scalable marine fuel.
Oslo | June 17, 2026 – Norwegian developer Azane Fuel Solutions has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering three ammonia bunkering projects backed by ENOVA, positioning the country at the forefront of zero-emission fuel infrastructure for shipping.
The company confirmed that development work is continuing across all three locations, Florø, Stavanger and Mongstad, with all terminals targeted to be operational by 2029.
Building the first ammonia bunkering network
Taken together, the three facilities are intended to form the backbone of what could become the world’s first dedicated ammonia bunkering network along a national coastline. The infrastructure is designed to support the anticipated rise in ammonia-fuelled vessels as the maritime sector accelerates efforts to decarbonize.
Ammonia is widely viewed as a leading candidate among zero-carbon marine fuels, particularly for deep-sea shipping, due to its carbon-free combustion profile. However, the absence of bunkering infrastructure has remained a critical bottleneck to adoption.
Azane’s projects aim to address that gap by enabling safe, efficient, and scalable delivery of ammonia fuel to ships.
Technology focus: safety and speed
The company has developed proprietary systems tailored specifically for ammonia transfer, an area that presents unique technical and safety challenges compared to conventional marine fuels.
Its solutions span bunkering terminals, cargo handling systems, and onboard fuel handling technologies, designed to ensure rapid transfer rates while maintaining strict safety protocols for handling the toxic and corrosive fuel.
Industry backing and strategic positioning
Headquartered in Oslo and Sandefjord, Azane is supported by a consortium of maritime and energy players, including Amon Maritime, ECOnnect Energy, Navigator Gas, and Yara Growth Ventures.
This backing underscores growing industry alignment around ammonia as a viable marine fuel, particularly in Northern Europe where regulatory pressure and green corridor initiatives are accelerating deployment timelines.
Outlook: aligning infrastructure with demand
With a 2029 delivery target, Azane’s timeline broadly aligns with expectations for commercial-scale deployment of ammonia-powered vessels later this decade. The company’s progress will be closely watched as a bellwether for the readiness of fuel supply chains to match shipowner ambitions.
If successfully delivered, the Norwegian projects could provide a blueprint for similar ammonia bunkering hubs globally, marking a significant step toward scaling zero-emission shipping solutions.
