(PPA S.A.) has successfully completed an emergency drill for marine and land pollution incident response at the Port of Piraeus, reaffirming its strong commitment to environmental protection, operational readiness, and sustainable port development.

The drill was conducted at the central port area, specifically at the Ferry Terminal (Gate E7), and formed part of PPA S.A.’s annual preparedness program aimed at ensuring the effective management of potential environmental incidents within port operations.

Strengthening Readiness and Environmental Protection

The primary objective of the exercise was to enhance knowledge, coordination, and hands-on experience among PPA S.A. personnel and port users, enabling the effective activation and implementation of the Marine and Land Pollution Response Plan. The drill also provided an opportunity to demonstrate the full operational readiness of pollution response equipment, ensuring rapid and efficient intervention in the event of an actual incident.

The exercise was carried out in close cooperation with PPA S.A.’s specialized anti-pollution contractor, responsible for implementing the “ANTIPOLLUTION ANE” Plan, and was observed by the competent Hellenic Coast Guard, underscoring the importance of coordination between port authorities and national maritime safety bodies.

Environmental Strategy at the Core of Port Development

Environmental protection and preventive action remain a core pillar of PPA S.A.’s strategic vision for the modernization and long-term development of the Port of Piraeus. The company consistently implements environmental projects and initiatives designed to prevent pollution incidents and establish a comprehensive preventive framework aligned with contemporary environmental challenges.

Through continuous training, investment in modern equipment, and systematic drills, PPA S.A. aims to ensure that the port operates in full compliance with international environmental standards while safeguarding marine ecosystems and surrounding urban areas.

Leadership Emphasis on Preparedness and Sustainability

Commenting on the successful completion of the drill, PPA S.A. CEO Mr. Su Xudong expressed his sincere appreciation to all personnel involved, highlighting the critical importance of continuous training and preparedness.

Continuous and systematic preparation is a fundamental factor in the effective management of potential emergency incidents. Targeted training and regular exercises create the necessary conditions for immediate response and a high level of operational readiness,” Mr. Su Xudong stated.

He further emphasized that the Port of Piraeus is evolving with firm commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, positioning itself as a modern, competitive, and exemplary green port in the Mediterranean and beyond.

Evaluation and Continuous Improvement

Following the conclusion of the drill, PPA S.A. will prepare a detailed evaluation report, documenting the results of the exercise and identifying areas for further improvement. This assessment process ensures continuous enhancement of operational readiness and reinforces the port’s ability to respond effectively to any environmental emergency.
