Gasum, a leading energy company in the Nordic region, has further cemented its commitment to sustainable maritime practices with the announcement of a new agreement with DNV. The agreement ensures that DNV, the world’s leading classification society, will verify the accuracy and compliance of Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling service.
Real-Time Emissions Data Validation with DNV’s Emissions Connect
Gasum will leverage DNV’s Emissions Connect solution to gather and validate real-time emissions data from all vessels participating in its FuelEU Maritime pool. This is made possible by a simple and cost-effective plug-and-play device installed on each vessel in the pool. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in Gasum’s ongoing efforts to support the decarbonization of the maritime sector and adhere to the EU’s strict FuelEU Maritime regulations.
End-of-Year Pool Verification for EU Reporting
As part of the agreement, DNV will be responsible for verifying the balance of the pool for EU reporting purposes at the end of the year. The FuelEU Maritime regulation, which aims to reduce the carbon intensity of fuels used in the maritime sector, mandates that vessels reduce their carbon emissions starting in 2025. These reductions will increase over time, ultimately aiming for an 80% reduction by 2050.
Compliance as a Service for Shipping Companies
The concept of “compliance as a service” plays a key role in the FuelEU Maritime framework. This regulation allows vessels that exceed the required emissions reduction targets to compensate for those that are under-compliant. Gasum’s pooling service offers a solution to shipping companies, allowing them to save on compliance costs and avoid penalties by participating in the pool. Gasum’s role in managing the pool involves supplying ultra-low emission bio-LNG, a renewable fuel that significantly reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels.
Gasum’s Commitment to Reliable Data and Collaboration
Jani Arala, Solution Lead at Gasum, emphasized the importance of data in managing the pooling service, stating, “Everything comes down to the validity of the data we collect as it enables us to keep the pool tightly in balance at all times. DNV’s Emissions Connect is the most reliable and easy-to-use tool on the market for gathering the data. DNV is a fantastic collaborator for us for this brand new service, because the company is trusted by all players in the industry, and we have a long history together.”
DNV’s Role in Supporting FuelEU Maritime Compliance
Helge Hermundsgård, Head of Sales Emissions Connect at DNV, also expressed support for the collaboration, saying, “DNV is proud to support Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool with our Emissions Connect solution, enabling effective pool compliance management throughout the year. With increasing regulatory pressure, shipowners need reliable data and transparent processes to navigate FuelEU Maritime requirements efficiently. We look forward to supporting this initiative and continuing to provide trusted solutions for a more sustainable maritime industry.”
Bio-LNG: A Key Solution for Emissions Reduction
Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool is designed to make compliance easier for shipping companies while promoting the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels. Bio-LNG, which Gasum supplies, is a fully renewable fuel that offers a life-cycle greenhouse gas emission reduction of approximately 90% compared to fossil fuels. In cases where biogas is produced from manure, the emissions can even be negative, making it a truly environmentally friendly option for maritime transport.
Gasum’s Strategic Goal for Renewable Gas
Gasum’s strategic goal is to provide 7 TWh of renewable gas, including biomethane and e-methane, to its customers by 2027. Through its pooling service and its commitment to delivering cleaner fuel solutions, Gasum is playing a critical role in the transition toward a carbon-neutral future, both on land and at sea.
