Monjasa UAE LNG Bunkering Vessel

Monjasa, one of the world’s top 10 marine fuel suppliers, is introducing the UAE’s first dedicated LNG Bunker Vessel (LBV), the Green Zeebrugge. This move signifies a bold step in meeting the growing demand for alternative marine fuels and underscores the UAE’s critical role as a hub for maritime innovation and sustainability.

LNG: A Cleaner Future for Marine Fuels

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has emerged as a transformative fuel in the shipping industry, offering significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. LNG emits 40% less CO2 than coal and 20% less than oil, making it the cleanest fossil fuel available. Its adoption helps shipowners comply with strict regulations such as the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

The Green Zeebrugge, with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters, represents a pivotal development for the UAE’s maritime sector. As LNG adoption accelerates globally—fueled by the rise in LNG-powered vessels, which have grown from just 62 in 2015 to 1,262 today—the introduction of this vessel strengthens the UAE’s position as a leader in sustainable maritime solutions.

Monjasa’s Commitment to the Middle East

Monjasa began its operations in the Middle East in 2005 and has since been a trailblazer in marine fuels supply. In 2022, the company became the first to deliver biofuels in the UAE, further solidifying its reputation for innovation and sustainability.

The deployment of the Green Zeebrugge marks another milestone for Monjasa, with the vessel en route to Dubai and expected to arrive before the New Year. After undergoing safety and quality inspections, Monjasa aims to conduct its first LNG bunker operation in January 2025.

Monjasa CEO Anders on Financial Year

Anders Østergaard, CEO of Monjasa, emphasized the significance of this development:

“Monjasa’s role is to keep challenging the status quo and providing new market opportunities to shipowners who are increasingly looking for ways to decarbonize their vessels. Deploying the Green Zeebrugge is the first important step in introducing LNG as a new marine fuel option in the UAE.”

Collaborative Efforts to Build LNG Infrastructure

To ensure the viability of LNG bunkering, Monjasa is collaborating with port authorities, energy companies, and shipowners to develop the necessary infrastructure. This joint effort aims to position the UAE as a leading hub for alternative marine fuels.

Monjasa’s long-term strategy includes offering a comprehensive fuel mix at UAE ports. In addition to LNG, this portfolio will include Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), Marine Gas Oil (MGO), High-Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO), and biofuels.

UAE’s Role in Global Maritime and Bunkering

The UAE is a global maritime powerhouse, strategically positioned at the crossroads of major shipping routes. Its ports serve as critical nodes for international trade and fuel supply. The introduction of LNG bunkering further enhances the nation’s reputation as a forward-thinking leader in maritime and energy sectors.
