Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf, a key player in ship repair, maintenance, conversion, and refit projects, has significantly advanced its sustainability efforts by expanding its shore power capabilities. Partnering with Elma Systems, the Amsterdam-based yard has introduced a new system that broadens the range of vessels compatible with clean, onshore power energy. This step aligns with the Damen Shipyards Group‘s overarching commitment to sustainability in the maritime industry.
Low-Emission Energy for a Greener Maritime Future
For years, Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf has provided shore power to vessels undergoing work at its facilities, reducing the reliance on fossil fuel-powered generators and supporting the industry’s transition to greener operations. However, the yard’s existing 50Hz shore power system was incompatible with many vessels in its clientele, such as offshore, navy, and fishing vessels that require 60Hz power.
Jeen van der Werf, Commercial Manager at Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf, highlighted the challenge “Previously, we were able to provide shore power with 50 hertz. However, we get a lot of offshore, navy, and fishing vessels come to the yard for work, and many of these vessels operate on 60 hertz.”
This limitation often necessitated hiring diesel-powered generators, which contradicted the yard’s environmental goals.
Collaborating for a Tailored Solution
Seeking a comprehensive solution to this challenge, Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf turned to Elma Systems. Together, they developed an innovative rotary converter system that adapts shore power to the required 60Hz frequency. This system, installed on the yard’s floating dock, boasts a capacity of 355A (Ampere) and supports up to 250kVA. Additionally, the system is equipped with a load-sharing feature, enabling the integration of supplementary power sources like batteries if higher capacity is needed.
Marco Roman of Elma Systems expressed his appreciation for the partnership, stating “We’re very grateful to Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf for placing their trust in us to develop this customised solution. Also, we value the collaboration that we experienced during this project, from development till installation. It has resulted in a solution that will help, not only Damen, but also the maritime industry as a whole to conduct operations in a cleaner, more environmentally conscious manner in a very smart way.”
Economic and Environmental Impact
The new shore power system eliminates the need for diesel generators, significantly reducing carbon emissions and operational costs. By lowering dependency on generators, Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf can offer more competitive pricing for its clients, enhancing its market appeal. Furthermore, the investment aligns with a 35% subsidy for shore power installations provided by the RVO (Dutch Enterprise Agency), underscoring the yard’s proactive approach to sustainability.
A Competitive Edge for Sustainable Bunkering
For the bunkering and ship repair sectors, this innovation sets a precedent for integrating sustainable energy solutions into traditional operations. The system not only lowers emissions but also supports the maritime industry’s broader decarbonization goals. Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf’s commitment to environmental stewardship reinforces its reputation as a forward-thinking leader in sustainable maritime solutions.
By adopting advanced shore power technology, the yard is paving the way for greener bunkering operations, contributing to a cleaner future for the shipping industry. This development is a testament to the growing importance of sustainable practices in ensuring the longevity and competitiveness of maritime businesses.
