Danish shipping company NORDEN has announced a significant partnership with Meta aimed at advancing the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. This sustainable marine fuel agreement marks an important milestone in NORDEN’s mission to offer innovative solutions that reduce emissions in the maritime sector, while also supporting its clients’ efforts to meet their sustainability goals.

In a statement, Anne Jensen, Chief Operating Officer at NORDEN, expressed her pride in welcoming Meta to their growing list of customers dedicated to decarbonising their maritime supply chains. “Both Meta and NORDEN share a commitment to high standards and to the further development of the decarbonisation of maritime freight, as demonstrated by our involvement in the Book and Claim Community’s Governing Board,” Jensen said.

The agreement between NORDEN and Meta leverages NORDEN’s emissions reduction solution, which addresses the challenges of decarbonising maritime freight in an environment with limited geographic biofuels availability. NORDEN follows a unique emissions reduction solution known as Book & Claim. This system works by using biofuel on a NORDEN-operated vessel, with the emissions reduction allocated to a third-party customer, in this case, Meta. This is done through a Book & Claim chain of custody system, ensuring transparency and security in the process.

NORDEN utilizes the Smart Freight Centre’s Voluntary Market-Based Measure Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting to facilitate the transfer of environmental attributes, such as emission reductions, to clients like Meta. The biofuel used by NORDEN in this solution is ISCC certified and offers an 80-90% life cycle emission reduction potential. As a drop-in substitute, this biofuel can be used by existing vessels, making it a flexible and sustainable option for decarbonising maritime operations.

An independent verifier, Normec Verifavia, authenticates the emissions reduction, which is then transacted on an external registry through 123Carbon. This provides a high level of transparency and assurance for customers like Meta, who are committed to reducing their carbon footprint across their global supply chain.

“Our Book & Claim solution allows customers of marine transportation across the globe to take advantage of emissions reductions from biofuels, even when biofuels are not physically available to be bunkered on a specific trading route or voyage,” Jensen added, emphasizing the flexibility of the solution for clients across different industries.

Meta, a global technology company with an ambitious sustainability agenda, has set a goal to reach net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2030.

Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta, highlighted the importance of partnerships with companies like NORDEN in achieving this goal. “Innovative solutions such as those that NORDEN is providing are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonise our value chain at the pace and scale required to achieve our emissions reduction targets,” said Lake. The collaboration with NORDEN supports Meta’s efforts to address emissions sources across its supply chain, including those related to maritime transportation of goods such as computing equipment and construction materials.

NORDEN’s solution is designed not only to benefit its direct customers but also to support companies in other industries that rely on maritime transportation and are seeking to decarbonise their supply chains. This partnership represents a significant step in NORDEN’s broader strategy to enable businesses around the world to credibly invest in maritime decarbonisation.
