Solstad Offshore has announced the introduction of certified renewable biodiesel (HVO) as part of its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and decarbonize its offshore operations. This initiative marks a significant step in the company’s long-term strategy to transition towards zero-emission technologies, providing an immediate solution to reducing emissions from its existing fleet.
In a recent development, Solstad bunkered approximately 500 m³ of renewable biodiesel on its anchor-handling tug supply vessel (AHTS), the Normand Prosper, in Mandal, Southern Norway. Following the bunkering, the vessel proceeded to install a mooring spread for a semisubmersible drilling unit in the Norwegian Sea.
Key Environmental Initiative
The biodiesel, sourced from Eco-1 Bioenergi AS, is produced using 100% renewable raw materials, such as waste and residues, and does not rely on food crops. As a “drop-in” fuel, the HVO biodiesel can be used in existing vessel machinery without requiring costly modifications, making it a practical and effective way to reduce emissions. The use of HVO is expected to result in over 90% reduction in GHG emissions from well to wake, underscoring Solstad’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Solstad Offshore’s Sustainability Director, Tor Inge Dale, highlighted the importance of this move, stating, “This renewable biodiesel pilot is strategically important for Solstad. It demonstrates our commitment to significantly reducing GHG emissions and reinforces our dedication to sustainable practices within the industry.”
