Successful Bunkering Operations in the Port of Savannah

Last week, the Progress successfully completed its inaugural bunkering operation with the 15,000 TEU Zim Mount Vinson at the Port of Savannah. This operation was seamlessly conducted alongside cargo operations, showcasing the efficiency and coordination of Shell’s LNG bunkering services. Building on this success, a second bunkering operation was safely completed this week with the CMA CGM Symi, further establishing Shell as a reliable LNG supplier for major shipping lines.

Elba LNG Liquefaction Plant: A Critical Hub for U.S. Bunkering

The LNG used in these operations was sourced from the Elba LNG liquefaction plant, a pivotal facility within Shell’s U.S. supply chain. The ISCC-certified Elba plant, connected to the U.S. gas grid and several bio-methane plants, is strategically positioned to support bio-LNG bunkering, enabling Shell’s customers to meet their carbon intensity reduction targets and advance toward more sustainable maritime operations.

The successful bunkering operations were made possible through the cooperation and trust of ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, CMA CGM, and other key stakeholders in the Port of Savannah. Shell acknowledges the critical role these partnerships play in advancing the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel, enabling the industry to achieve its decarbonization goals today and in the future.

Crowley Maritime is the owner and operator of the newbuild LNG bunker barge, Progress. Received at the beginning of the month, Crowley is dedicated to supporting the transition to LNG as a marine fuel, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of bunkering operations.

Shell’s World-Class Marine Fuels Network: A Pathway to Decarbonization

Shell has established the world’s largest LNG bunkering network, with 22 locations across 13 countries, supported by 12 bunkering vessels. To date, Shell has completed more than 1,700 bunkering operations globally, providing shipping companies with the infrastructure needed to transition to cleaner fuels.

LNG is currently the lowest carbon fuel available at scale for shipping, offering up to a 23% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (well-to-wake) compared to very low sulfur fuel oil. Furthermore, Shell’s network is equipped to incrementally incorporate bio-LNG and, in the future, synthetic LNG, offering a clear pathway toward net-zero emissions.
