Avenir LNG has successfully conducted its inaugural bio-LNG delivery to Destination Gotland, marking a significant milestone in the quest for greener maritime fuel solutions. The eco-friendly bio-LNG was delivered by Avenir’s bunker vessel, Avenir Aspiration, at the Port of Visby, Sweden. This ISCC-certified bio-LNG was produced in Europe and loaded onto Avenir’s bunker and transport vessel at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium.
The introduction of bio-LNG represents a notable shift from fossil fuels, significantly reducing emissions from the operations of Destination Gotland’s ferries. Marcus Risberg, CEO of Destination Gotland, expressed satisfaction with the expanded cooperation, stating, “We are committed to providing comfortable and reliable transport services between the Swedish mainland and Gotland. The ability to use bio-LNG ensures that we can enhance the sustainability of our services, reducing environmental impact and benefiting the community.”
Avenir LNG’s collaboration with various biofuel traders facilitates access to both physical and mass-balanced bio-LNG at several European terminals. This partnership allows Avenir to offer customized products and supply chains for marine and industrial clients across Europe.
Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director of Avenir LNG, remarked “As a leading supplier of small-scale LNG and owner of one of the largest global LNG bunker vessel fleets, we are dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and efficient fuels while minimizing environmental impact. Establishing new bio-LNG supply chains is central to our global growth strategy.”
In 2022, Avenir LNG and Destination Gotland signed a multi-year contract for the supply of LNG to the dual-fuel RoPax ferries, MS Gotland and MS Visby. Since the agreement, Avenir has been performing up to 20 ship-to-ship LNG bunker operations per month at Swedish ports, including Visby and Nynashamn.
Jan Schubert, Commercial Director at Avenir LNG, commented “The shipping industry is making strides in emission reductions and sustainability. Pioneers like Destination Gotland, who are not only using LNG but also adopting bio-LNG, are leading the way. We are proud to support their efforts in reducing environmental impact and are honored to be part of this journey.”
What is Bio-LNG?
Bio-LNG, or bio-liquefied natural gas, is a renewable fuel produced from organic materials such as agricultural waste, forestry residues, and food waste. Unlike conventional LNG, which is derived from fossil fuels, bio-LNG is created through the process of anaerobic digestion or gasification, where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas. This biogas is then purified and liquefied to create bio-LNG. As a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, bio-LNG significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and offers a sustainable option for powering ships, vehicles, and industrial processes. Its use aligns with global efforts to lower carbon footprints and transition towards more eco-friendly energy sources.
