Venture Global announced the successful launch of its first LNG vessel, the Venture Gator, at a ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoji-si, South Korea. This milestone marks the beginning of a significant fleet expansion effort aimed at transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to various global destinations.
The Venture Gator is the first of nine LNG carriers scheduled for completion across three shipyards in South Korea over the next 24 months.
Equipped with state-of-the-art environmental and efficiency technologies, the 174,000 cubic meter Venture Gator will primarily utilize Venture Global’s own LNG for propulsion. Starting this fall, it will join the fleet’s other eight ships in servicing global partners in Europe and Asia.
Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global LNG, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “Venture Global is proud to have launched our first ship, the Venture Gator at SHI in Korea. President Biden has committed to increasing LNG supply into Europe and we are pleased to be in a position to continue to support these efforts with a fast-growing shipping fleet, wholly owned, operated and controlled by Venture Global. With these ships, we will increase the security of natural gas supply, through low-cost LNG delivered directly to allies across the world.”
The Venture Gator exemplifies cutting-edge technology in LNG transport, featuring innovations such as a new hull design, onboard reliquefaction capabilities to handle gas boil-off, air-lubrication systems for reduced water friction, an auxiliary shaft generator to optimize energy use at sea, and exhaust gas recirculation systems to minimize methane emissions. These advancements position Venture Global’s LNG carrier fleet among the most environmentally friendly in the industry.
