HMM and IKEA Supply Chain Operations have joined hands in a landmark agreement aimed at leveraging HMM’s ‘Green Sailing Service’, a cutting-edge low-carbon ocean transport solution. The primary objective of this collaboration is to shrink their environmental footprint and play a significant role in the global initiative towards the decarbonization of ocean transportation.
At the heart of this strategic partnership lies a concerted effort to substantially slash carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions. This ambitious goal will be achieved by replacing conventional fossil fuels with environmentally responsible, waste-based biofuels for transporting IKEA products across the ocean.
The biofuels chosen for this endeavor are meticulously sourced and ISCC-certified, derived exclusively from waste-based biomass. HMM is committed to deploying these sustainable biofuels for its FIM service, which serves as a crucial link between the Far East, India, and the Mediterranean.
One of the most significant highlights of this agreement is the projected reduction of approximately 11,500 tonnes of CO2e emissions. This reduction is expected to be realized from March 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, through the extensive use of biofuels for all ocean cargo shipments between IKEA and HMM. Remarkably, the emissions saved through this green partnership are equivalent to the carbon footprint of transporting 14,534 TEU worth of Zero Emission Cargo from Asia (specifically Busan) to Europe (Rotterdam).
IKEA, a global leader in sustainable practices, has set ambitious targets for itself. The company aims to slash relative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their product transportation by a staggering 70% by the year 2030. Furthermore, IKEA is steadfast in its commitment to becoming a zero-emission cargo owner by the year 2040.
HMM, with its pioneering ‘Green Sailing Service’ launched earlier this year, is keen on expanding the scope of its sustainable offerings through collaborative efforts.
An official from HMM expressed the company’s firm commitment, stating, “We will continue to explore avenues that prioritize sustainable development, thereby propelling us closer to our goal of carbon neutrality.”
