Gasum and Equinor Bunkering Deal

Gasum, a Nordic energy expert, has signed a long-term contract with Norway-based global energy company Equinor to continue supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Equinor’s dual-fuel chartered fleet of vessels. This new agreement builds on the successful partnership the two companies have enjoyed under previous contracts.

Gasum will utilize its bunker vessels Coralius, Kairos, and Coral Energy for the bunkering operations, ensuring a reliable and efficient supply of LNG to Equinor’s fleet. The agreement also encompasses additional support services such as cooling down and gassing up, which have been integral to Gasum’s collaboration with Equinor. This year alone, Gasum has organized three separate LNG cool down operations for Equinor in Skagen.

Both companies are committed to ambitious sustainability goals aimed at enabling a cleaner energy future. Equinor has set a target to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050. The use of LNG in maritime transport is a significant step towards this goal, as it completely removes sulfur oxides (SOx) and particles, reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by up to 85%, and lowers CO2 emissions by at least 20%. Additionally, LNG is interchangeable with liquefied biogas (LBG), which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90% compared to conventional marine fuels like marine gasoil (MGO).

The maritime industry, which accounts for up to 3% of the world’s total CO2 emissions and 10–15% of global SOx and NOx emissions, is under increasing pressure to adopt low-emission fuels. With 90% of global cargo transported by sea, transitioning to cleaner fuels is crucial. Regulatory bodies like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU) have set stringent goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and customers are demanding more sustainable transportation solutions to meet their own emission reduction targets.

LNG is currently the most effective way to lower maritime emissions and has been used as a fuel in maritime transport for decades. Many new LNG vessels are dual-fuel, capable of operating on both LNG and conventional fuels or electricity. This flexibility allows shipping companies to easily switch to renewable LBG or synthetic LNG without modifications, further reducing emissions.

Gasum is a trusted provider of LNG and LBG for ships, having conducted over 1,000 successful and safe bunkering operations in the Nordics and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp ARA region. The company offers flexible delivery solutions and bunkering services, including ship-to-ship and truck-to-ship bunkering, ensuring reliable fuel supply for the maritime industry.

The strategic goal of Gasum is to bring seven terawatt-hours (7 TWh) of renewable gas to market annually by 2027, which would result in a combined carbon dioxide reduction of 1.8 million tons per year for its customers. The Nordic countries have the potential to produce over 400 TWh of renewable fuels, equivalent to the total energy currently used for refueling ships across the EU.

Gasum’s commitment to providing cleaner energy solutions aligns with the growing demand for alternative maritime fuels, positioning LNG and renewable liquefied gases as competitive and sustainable options for the future of maritime transport.
