Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a global leader in shipping and logistics, has announced a significant move towards sustainable maritime transportation with the declaration of options for the construction of four additional next-generation Shaper Class pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessels. These vessels, boasting a capacity of 9,300 CEU (car equivalent units), will be equipped with methanol dual fuel engines, allowing them to utilize alternative fuel sources upon delivery.
Furthermore, these vessels will be designed to be ammonia-ready, enabling conversion to this eco-friendly fuel as soon as it becomes available in a safe and secure manner. This forward-looking approach aligns with Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions across its end-to-end service by the year 2027.
Xavier Leroi, EVP & COO Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, emphasized the collaborative effort between the company and its customers in driving industry transformation towards sustainability, stating, “Together with our customers, we are committed to further shaping our industry and accelerating towards net zero. These new vessels are a vital part of that journey.”
This latest commitment brings the total number of Shaper Class vessels on order with Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) to eight. Additionally, Wallenius Wilhelmsen retains further options for additional vessels.
The first of the Shaper Class vessels, already in the pipeline, are slated for delivery in the second half of 2026. The newly declared options will see the four additional vessels delivered between May and November 2027. This expansion of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s fleet underscores its dedication to pioneering sustainable solutions in the maritime sector, setting a precedent for environmentally conscious shipping practices.
