In a pioneering effort to revolutionize sustainable shipping, United European Car Carriers (UECC) has joined forces with industry leaders such as Lloyd’s Register FOBAS, engine manufacturer Wartsila, and biofuel supplier ACT Group to evaluate Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)-based biofuel for maritime use.
Under this groundbreaking collaboration, ACT Group has developed FSI.100, a CNSL-based biofuel, showcasing their dedication to innovation and eco-friendliness. The creation of FSI.100 involved meticulous testing and a closely monitored supply chain, earning the confidence of UECC. After rigorous examination and testing, FSI.100 was approved by engine manufacturers as a 30% blend component in an ISO 8217 DMA grade distillate fuel oil for sea trials, marking a significant leap forward in sustainable marine fuel development.
One of the key features of FSI.100 is its sustainable and transparent supply chain, ensuring accountability and traceability from extraction to consumption. This approach not only boosts confidence in CNSL-derived marine fuels but also promotes resource efficiency, in line with circular economy principles.
Moreover, FSI.100 boasts impressive maritime fuel properties, including ultra-low sulfur content and significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Compared to conventional maritime fuels, FSI.100 offers a remarkable 90% reduction in well-to-wake emissions, making it a promising solution for decarbonizing the shipping industry.
UECC’s Energy & Sustainability Manager, Daniel Gent, underscores the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing the importance of exploring innovative solutions in the journey towards decarbonization. The partnership between UECC, LR FOBAS, Wartsila, and ACT Group has led to a structured evaluation process, ensuring the suitability of CNSL-based FSI.100 blends for marine applications.
The provisional acceptance of FSI.100 as a blend component in distillate DMA marine fuel oil for sea trials, backed by OEM, Class, and flag Administrations, marks a significant milestone for the maritime industry. This achievement underscores the importance of transparency and rigorous assessment in adopting sustainable shipping fuels.
Fabio Scaramelli, leading the biofuels supply and trading division at ACT Group, expresses enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting its role in advancing CNSL-based biofuels and supporting the industry’s decarbonization efforts.
UECC’s commitment to transparency extends to recommending precautionary measures in bunker procurement, advocating for collaboration, transparency, and rigorous assessment in sustainable shipping solutions.
As UECC continues to lead the charge in sustainable Ro-Ro shipping, their collaboration with industry leaders sets a precedent for responsible business practices and innovation in the maritime sector.
