Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. successfully completed its first simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) LNG bunkering for the 15,500 TEU dual-fuel vessel YM Willpower at the Port of Shanghai. In collaboration with SIPG and SIPG Energy Shanghai, the vessel received approximately 2,000 metric tons of LNG while actively handling cargo to drastically reduce port turnaround times. This operational milestone paves the way for its upcoming sister ships and underscores Yang Ming’s broader commitment to achieving significant emissions reductions and a diversified alternative fuel strategy.
Shanghai, China | August 17, 2026 – Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. has marked a major operational milestone in its fleet decarbonization roadmap, successfully executing its first-ever simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) LNG bunkering for the ultra-large container vessel YM Willpower at the Port of Shanghai.
Working in close coordination with the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and SIPG Energy Shanghai, the 15,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessel received approximately 2,000 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) while simultaneously conducting active cargo loading and discharging.
Maximizing Port Efficiency Through SIMOPS
The successful execution of SIMOPS represents a critical efficiency booster for container line schedules. By decoupling fuel replenishment from pure downtime at berth, the operation dramatically compresses vessel turnaround times in port.
- Bunker Volume: 2,000 MT of LNG
- Operation Type: Simultaneous Ship-to-Ship (STS) Bunkering and Cargo Handling
- Key Partners: Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) & SIPG Energy Shanghai
“With LNG dual-fuel technology, we are continuing to expand alternative-fuel bunkering capabilities, enhance operational flexibility, and advance lower-carbon shipping solutions,” Yang Ming noted in a statement detailing the event.
Quantifiable Environmental Gains
As the lead vessel of a new series of 15,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels phasing into service, the YM Willpower serves as a benchmark for Yang Ming’s lower-carbon transition. Compared to conventional heavy fuel oils, the integration of LNG delivers immediate, substantial emission cuts:
- CO₂ Emissions: 20% Reduction
- Sulphur Oxides (SOx): 99% Reduction
- Particulate Matter: 85% Reduction
Blueprint for Sister Vessels
The seamless execution in Shanghai acts as a vital operational blueprint for the remaining sister ships currently under construction for Yang Ming’s fleet.
Looking forward, the Taiwanese carrier has confirmed it will maintain a diversified alternative fuel strategy, combining LNG, sustainable biofuels, and comprehensive vessel hardware and digital upgrades, to balance long-term maritime growth with strict environmental compliance.
