Schottel EcoPellers Ferries Autonomous

SCHOTTEL – In a significant development for maritime transport, Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 has commissioned four autonomous, zero-emission ferries to be built by Turkish shipbuilder Tersan Shipyard. These vessels, the first of their kind globally, will be equipped with SCHOTTEL EcoPellers, ensuring high efficiency and sustainability. This move underlines Fjord1’s ongoing commitment to pioneering eco-friendly maritime solutions.

Revolutionary Propulsion for a Greener Future

Each of the 120-meter-long, 18.6-meter-wide double-ended ferries will feature two SCHOTTEL EcoPellers, specifically the electrically driven SRE 340 model. These L-Drive thrusters are designed to optimize installation and operational efficiency, eliminating the upper gearbox to reduce mechanical losses. This innovation leads to lower energy consumption, significantly reducing both operational (OPEX) and capital expenditures (CAPEX).

This advancement plays a pivotal role in minimizing battery requirements, aligning with Fjord1’s objectives to operate in the most energy-efficient and sustainable manner possible. As a result, these ferries are poised to set new standards for green transportation in the ferry sector.

Enhanced Sea Passenger Experience

One of the key benefits of the SCHOTTEL EcoPellers is the enhanced onboard comfort. The omission of the upper gearbox reduces vibration and noise, creating a smoother and quieter ride for passengers. Each thruster unit boasts a propeller diameter of 2,100 mm and an input power of 1,200 kW. To further enhance operational reliability, the thrusters will be equipped with SCHOTTEL’s MariHub condition monitoring system, allowing for predictive, condition-based maintenance.

Built in Turkey by Tersan Shipyards

Set to begin operation in September 2026, these state-of-the-art ferries will enhance the Lavik-Oppedal route on the Sognefjord, located 60 miles north of Bergen, Norway. Each ferry will have the capacity to accommodate 399 passengers, including crew, and up to 120 passenger cars, providing a seamless and sustainable travel experience for those crossing the fjord.

A significant feature of these ferries is their high degree of automation, with a land-based control center overseeing the operation. Autonomous functions, such as autocrossing and autodocking, will be introduced in 2027, with full autonomous navigation expected by 2028. This cutting-edge technology will not only reduce the need for manual operations but also increase operational safety and efficiency.
