Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will supply Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems for four new GSX Energy LNG bunkering vessels being built in China. The order, finalized in early 2026, underscores the company’s market-leading role in supporting the growing global fleet of LNG-fuelled ships.
Helsinki | May 4, 2026 – Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the technology group Wärtsilä, has solidified its leading position in the LNG bunkering sector by securing a contract to supply comprehensive Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply systems for four new LNG bunkering vessels.
The vessels are currently under construction at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China for the owner GSX Energy. Wärtsilä’s engagement follows two successful bookings, the first two vessels were ordered in Q1 2026, with the subsequent pair confirmed in Q2 2026.
Driving the LNG Transition
As the maritime industry seeks to bridge the gap between traditional diesel fuels and future low-carbon alternatives, LNG has emerged as a preferred solution. With projections suggesting that more than 1,150 LNG dual-fuel vessels will be in operation worldwide by 2028, the demand for reliable, efficient bunkering infrastructure is at an all-time high.
“As we see LNG as an enabler of a greener future for shipping, our cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems deliver efficient support for bunkering vessels serving LNG-fuelled ships,” said Barry Yang, Sales Manager China, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions. “The total package represents a flexible and well-proven solution for operational efficiency.“
Scope of Work and Partnership
Under the agreement, Wärtsilä will provide:
- Complete System Package: Integration of advanced Cargo Handling and Fuel Gas Supply equipment.
- Engineering & Design: Full design and engineering support for the systems.
- Delivery Timeline: Equipment deliveries for the first two vessels are scheduled to commence in December 2026.
This contract reinforces a long-standing partnership between Wärtsilä and the Nantong CIMC SOE shipyard, building on a history of successful collaborations on small-scale LNG carriers, LPG carriers, and multi-gas vessels.
