Venture Energy Limited, Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited, and Shanghai Shenji Energy have successfully executed Hong Kong’s largest green methanol bunkering operation, delivering 1,000 tonnes of alternative fuel to a China Merchants Shenzhen Shipping RoRo vessel. This landmark deployment utilizes the Da Qing 268 bunker barge, immediately cementing the Greater Bay Area’s commercial infrastructure as a premier, scalable hub for next-generation marine fuels.
Hong Kong | July 13, 2026 – In a major leap forward for the Greater Bay Area’s decarbonization ambitions, Hong Kong has successfully completed its largest-ever green methanol bunkering operation. The milestone deployment saw 1,000 tonnes of green methanol transferred to a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel owned by China Merchants Shenzhen Shipping Company Ltd. (CM Shenzhen), a subsidiary of state-owned conglomerate China Merchants Group.
The operation was made possible through a high-profile tripartite alignment linking regional logistics, state-backed infrastructure, and upstream production:
- Venture Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong shipping legacy Wah Kwong, managed the commercial structuring and secured the fuel supply.
- Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited provided the critical local bunkering infrastructure and operational execution via the barge Da Qing 268.
- Shanghai Shenji Energy & Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (an affiliate of energy giant Shenergy Group) produced and supplied the certified green molecules from East China.
Activating the Greater Bay Supply Chain
While Hong Kong has long been one of the world’s premier conventional bunkering hubs, establishing the specialized supply chains required for alternative, low-carbon marine fuels has remained a structural bottleneck for the region.
This 1,000-tonne operation serves as a proof-of-concept for a scalable, cross-regional green fuel pipeline. By sourcing the green methanol from Shenji Energy in East China and routing it through Sinopec HK’s downstream infrastructure, Venture Energy demonstrated its capability to bridge geographic supply-demand gaps.
“This milestone highlights Venture Energy’s supply capabilities to bridge growing demand in the Greater Bay Area with diversified supply sources across North and East China,” the company noted in an official statement. “Venture Energy contribute to the development of a reliable and scalable green marine fuel supply chain for the region.”
For Hong Kong, the timing is critical. As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) tightens its greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets toward a net-zero trajectory by or around 2050, global dual-fuel fleets are expanding rapidly. Port cities without ready-to-scale alternative fuel infrastructure risk losing market share to competing regional hubs like Singapore, which has already established routine methanol bunkering protocols.
Legacy Meets Transnational Scale
The corporate architecture behind the transaction highlights a shifting dynamic in the marine fuel ecosystem, where traditional shipping families and state-owned energy majors are co-investing in value-chain integration.
Venture Energy & The Wah Kwong Pedigree
Venture Energy operates as the future-fuels arm of Wah Kwong, a privately held, integrated shipping titan with a 70-year history in ship owning, asset management, and dry bulk operations. By positioning Venture Energy as an intermediary between mainland China’s vast renewable production capacity and international maritime demand, Wah Kwong is pivoting toward asset-light infrastructure plays. The company is actively investing in upstream clean fuel projects, aiming to offer long-term visibility and off-take security for both methanol and ammonia.
Sinopec HK’s Decarbonization Push
As the downstream international investment vehicle for Sinopec Group, Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited has historically anchored the city’s conventional fuel oil, LPG, and aviation sectors. However, in alignment with Beijing’s overarching “Dual Carbon” targets, the company is aggressively pivoting its infrastructure portfolio. Aside from this record methanol operation, Sinopec HK recently built Hong Kong’s first hydrogen refueling station, initiated a solar-powered green hydrogen project, and integrated sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and marine biofuels into its commercial network.
The Multi-Fuel Race
The success of the Da Qing 268 operation signals that Hong Kong’s maritime ecosystem is technically ready to handle large-scale, volatile alternative fuels. However, industry analysts note that the ultimate test for the Greater Bay Area will be price competitiveness and regular, volume-contracted availability of certified green fuels compared to standard very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).
Venture Energy has indicated that this operation is a baseline, with plans to expand collaborations across production, logistics, and storage to cement an integrated, sustainable marine fuel ecosystem across the Asia-Pacific corridor.
About Sinopec HK
Established in 1989, Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited is Hong Kong’s leading oil, LPG, and aviation fuel supplier, serving as the Sinopec Group’s downstream international investment platform. The company operates two oil depots, 54 service stations, and a tanker fleet, while expanding its retail and aviation refueling network across more than 10 countries, including Singapore, Australia, and Thailand.
Aligning with “Dual Carbon” goals, the company is accelerating its green transition. It built Hong Kong’s first hydrogen refueling station, is developing a solar-powered green hydrogen project, has deployed over 200 EV charging piles, and regularly supplies sustainable aviation and marine biofuels. Driven by its vision to become a “leading integrated oil and gas service provider in the Asia-Pacific,” Sinopec Hong Kong continues to focus on green transformation and global expansion to power regional economic growth.
