Molgas Energy Group has achieved a critical infrastructure milestone in the Mediterranean by successfully executing the first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Port of Palermo, Sicily. Utilising a coordinated four-nation logistical effort and three cryogenic tank trucks, the high-precision, 12-hour truck-to-ship operation marks a significant step forward in lowering regional maritime emissions.
Palermo, Italy | June 16, 2026 – European downstream gas specialist Molgas Energy Group has opened a new alternative fuel corridor in the Mediterranean, successfully conducting the first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Port of Palermo, Sicily.
The precision, truck-to-ship (TTS) operation marks a critical expansion of Italy’s small-scale LNG supply chain. It was delivered following months of multilateral logistical preparation and executed over a rigorous 10-to-12-hour window with zero margin for error.
Logistical Blueprint: A Four-Nation Collaboration
The landmark operation required meticulous cross-border coordination, pulling together commercial, technical, and safety engineering teams from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Greece.
To facilitate the initial fuel loading and thoroughly test the receiving ferry’s complex onboard fuel systems, Molgas deployed a synchronized fleet of three cryogenic tank trucks. The simultaneous truck-to-ship maneuvering allowed for continuous gas flow under strict safety protocols, establishing a repeatable operational framework for the Sicilian port going forward.

Italy’s Accelerating LNG Grid
The successful delivery in Palermo highlights a broader, rapid transformation of Italian maritime hubs. While northern ports like Genoa and Venice have steadily scaled up their alternative fuel capabilities over the last two years, southern Italian and Sicilian networks are now aggressively closing the infrastructure gap.
Molgas itself has been on a targeted expansion path across Italy since launching its regional truck-to-ship operations in April 2024, having previously executed Sicily’s first-ever localized LNG bunkering milestone at the neighboring Port of Trapani.
Italian LNG Bunkering Milestones (Recent Trajectory)
| Port Hub | Operator / Supplier | Method | Target Vessel Segment |
| Palermo | Molgas Energy Group | Truck-to-Ship (TTS) | Ro-Pax Passenger Ferry |
| Naples | Axpo Italia | Ship-to-Ship (Green Zeebrugge) | Dual-Fuel Cruise Liner |
| Genoa | Axpo Italia | Ship-to-Ship (Green Pearl) | Ro-Pax (GNV Aurora) |
| Trapani | Molgas Energy Group | Truck-to-Ship (TTS) | Short-Sea Passenger Ferry |
Environmental Mandates Driving Port Upgrades
The shift toward regional LNG infrastructure is heavily incentivized by tightening European maritime emissions caps, including the phased integration of shipping into the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the FuelEU Maritime mandates.
By switching to LNG, regional ferry and cruise operators can virtually eliminate nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) while unlocking an immediate reduction in overall carbon dioxide (CO2) output compared to conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO).
“Every port that carries out its first bunkering operation takes a meaningful step toward a cleaner and more sustainable maritime future,” Molgas stated. “We will continue moving forward, port by port, towards more sustainable shipping.”
As an established European leader in downstream LNG and renewable gases, the Madrid-headquartered group currently provides off-grid infrastructure solutions to more than 200 industrial clients and operates a network of over 70 truck-refueling stations. With the successful activation of Palermo, the group is structurally positioned to capture growing alternative fuel demand from the heavy Ro-Ro and cruise segments transiting the central Mediterranean chokepoints.
About Molgas Energy Group
Molgas Energy Group is a dominant pan-European leader in downstream LNG, bio-LNG, and alternative fuel logistics, driving the continent’s industrial, heavy-duty road transport, and marine energy transitions. Backed by extensive infrastructure, including a proprietary network of over 70 road-fueling stations, 200 industrial supply points, and a rapidly expanding fleet of small-scale bunkering vessels bolstered by its strategic acquisition of Titan Clean Fuels, the group provides comprehensive, end-to-end small-scale gas solutions. By successfully executing intricate technical operations like the conditioning and cryogenic bunkering of cutting-edge dual-fuel transport ships, Molgas serves as a crucial infrastructural bridge that allows traditional maritime operators to instantly meet tightening regional emission caps while scaling up their commercial volume.
