Uniper Expands Green Portfolio: Begins BioLNG Production in Rotterdam

Uniper Bio-LNG Gate Terminal

Uniper, a global energy company, has taken a significant step in its decarbonization journey by becoming the first shipper to produce BioLNG at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam. This development marks a major milestone in Uniper’s efforts to establish a fully integrated biomethane-BioLNG supply chain.

At the Gate terminal, Uniper has leveraged its BioLNG production capacity to convert biomethane into BioLNG. The BioLNG produced is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and emission reduction.

Biomethane, the underlying commodity, is initially produced in one of the EU member states. It undergoes upgrading to remove substances such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide before being fed into the Dutch natural gas grid. The Gate terminal then takes over, liquefying the biomethane using its existing infrastructure. The terminal’s liquefier has a capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per year, available for use by existing shippers.

Carsten Poppinga, Chief Commercial Officer of Uniper, expressed enthusiasm about this advancement: “We are excited to be able to take another step towards a greener future. The decarbonization of the market for marine and truck fuels will require the use of several low to zero-carbon fuels. BioLNG is among the most important ones. It will contribute to meeting the emission reduction targets of the International Maritime Organization for seagoing vessels, including Uniper’s own LNG fleet. It is great that once again we are able to generate incremental value out of our Gate terminal asset.”

This initiative aligns with Uniper’s broader strategy to enhance the value of its Gate terminal asset and further reduce emissions across its portfolio. By expanding its green portfolio to include BioLNG, Uniper is making substantial progress towards its carbon-neutrality goal for 2040 and supporting the International Maritime Organization’s emission reduction targets.
