A Decade-Plus Commitment to Innovation and Carbon Reduction
At the heart of this initiative is a new class of energy-efficient vessels, featuring diesel-electric, multi-fuel propulsion systems and a range of sustainable add-ons. Designed to deliver a 30% reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional systems, the new ships are set to redefine standards in both the aquaculture and shipping industries.
The vessels also incorporate:
- Biofuel capabilities for reduced carbon intensity;
- Shore-power connections to cut emissions during port stays;
- Wind-assisted propulsion (WAPS) where feasible;
- And several additional decarbonization technologies aimed at long-term environmental benefits.
Strategic Partners Align for Maritime Innovation
The partnership brings together three well-established maritime and aquaculture players:
- Vertom Group, based in The Netherlands, will oversee vessel construction, delivering four high-efficiency ships equipped with the latest green maritime technologies. Most of the fleet is scheduled for delivery in 2026.
- Strand Shipping, a key operator in the Scandinavian shipping sector, will be responsible for day-to-day vessel operations, bringing localized expertise and operational reliability.
- Skretting, backed by parent companies Nutreco and SHV, will benefit from the optimized transport of raw materials and a more sustainable footprint throughout its global feed production network.
The initiative was facilitated by Kuehne + Nagel, a logistics partner that played a key role in shaping the long-term supply chain strategy.
Environmental Goals Aligned with Operational Excellence
“This partnership sets a new benchmark for sustainability in short-sea shipping,” shared Skretting. “It’s not just about efficiency—it’s about making real, measurable progress toward our carbon goals while ensuring stable, high-performance logistics for our feed operations worldwide.”
With over 3 million tons of aquaculture feed produced annually, Skretting’s operational footprint spans 18 countries and serves more than 60 species. The four new vessels are a strategic fit for its mission to provide smarter, cleaner transport solutions while supporting its brand promise of “Feeding the Future.”
This agreement marks a significant step forward for sustainable maritime transport in the aquaculture industry, blending long-term vision, technical innovation, and deep-rooted collaboration to deliver cleaner seas and smarter supply chains for the years ahead.
