Hurtigruten and VARD have revealed the next evolution of their SeaZero project, marking a significant leap forward in the design of future coastal cruising ships. This advanced vessel, incorporating cutting-edge technologies, promises to deliver zero-emission operations along the Norwegian coast. With large batteries, sails, and innovative energy-saving solutions, the new ship is set to cut energy consumption by an impressive 40-50% compared to existing cruise ships.
SeaZero Project – VARD’s Innovative Design for Sustainability
The SeaZero design, created in collaboration with VARD, Hurtigruten’s long-time partner, showcases several novel solutions aimed at reducing environmental impact. VARD, renowned for its shipbuilding expertise, spearheaded the development, ensuring the design balances technological innovation with feasibility.
Torkild Skjong, Lead Concept Designer at VARD emphasized the importance of integrating the most promising technologies into the design, noting that achieving zero emissions while maintaining the high standards of performance required for coastal cruising is a delicate balancing act. Skjong stated, “Designing the SeaZero vessel is like balancing on the edge of feasibility.”
Energy-Saving Features: Sails and Batteries
Among the most striking features of the SeaZero design are the retractable sails, known as Ocean Wings, developed in France and already used on the cargo ship Canopée. These sails are expected to reduce energy consumption by about 10%. In addition to the sails, solar panels will provide further energy savings, contributing an additional 2-3%.
The ship will primarily operate on large battery systems, with a capacity of approximately 60 megawatt-hours. These batteries will enable the ship to sail emission-free during normal operations along the Norwegian coast, supported by other energy-efficient innovations.
Gerry Larsson-Fedde, Chief Operating Officer at Hurtigruten, highlighted that these sails and solar panels, combined with battery power, will play a critical role in achieving significant energy savings. “We still see significant energy savings from having retractable sails with solar panels, but this requires thorough studies, including model tests.”
Technologically Advanced Propulsion and Air Lubrication
To further enhance efficiency, the SeaZero ship will feature contra-rotating propellers as its main propulsion system. Additionally, two retractable thrusters at the stern will aid in maneuvering, especially during port operations, adding redundancy for enhanced safety.
A key energy-saving innovation is the air lubrication system, where air bubbles are pumped under the hull to reduce drag. This method is estimated to cut energy consumption by 5-10%. Together with a streamlined hull design, advanced anti-fouling coatings, and regular hull cleaning, water resistance is minimized, contributing to the overall efficiency of the vessel.
Smart Cabins and Energy Management
In line with the ship’s sustainability focus, guests will be able to manage their own energy usage through “smart cabins.” These cabins, equipped with advanced sensors, will allow passengers to control heating, ventilation, and view their energy consumption through an app and a screen within the cabin. This feature is intended to raise awareness about sustainability among passengers.
Hurtigruten is already conducting tests with these advanced sensors, and Larsson-Fedde confirmed that full-scale trials with guests onboard will follow soon.
A Step Toward a Greener Future
The SeaZero project represents Hurtigruten’s commitment to creating a greener future for coastal cruising. By focusing on reducing energy consumption, implementing innovative technologies like retractable sails, solar panels, air lubrication, and smart cabins, the company aims to set a new standard for sustainable maritime travel.
As the design continues to evolve, both Hurtigruten and VARD are confident that the SeaZero vessel will offer a glimpse into the future of eco-friendly cruising, setting a benchmark for the maritime industry as a whole.
