Donsö, Sweden — August 31, 2025 — As the Donsö Shipping Meet gathered maritime stakeholders from across Europe, Swedish marine fuel supplier ScanOcean marked the occasion with a ship-to-ship (STS) delivery of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to the Fure Valö, a vessel operated by Furetank and powered primarily by renewable liquefied biogas (LBG).
The operation, carried out off Donsö, replaced conventional marine gasoil (MGO) with HVO as a pilot fuel, representing another practical step forward in the industry’s shift toward low-emission alternatives.
The Fure Valö is among a growing number of vessels in Northern Europe transitioning to hybrid and renewable propulsion systems. By integrating HVO into its fuel mix, the tanker not only reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 95% but also aligns with the compliance demands of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime, without requiring engine modifications.

A Practical Transition
Unlike more complex decarbonization options, HVO remains a “drop-in” solution — one that offers immediate emission reductions while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure and engines. As such, it is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for shipowners navigating the regulatory and reputational pressures of maritime decarbonization.
According to ScanOcean, the delivered HVO is AFCAT3-free, ensuring full compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation that came into force this year.
A Shared Commitment to Decarbonization
The bunkering operation reflects both ScanOcean’s growing profile as a renewable fuels supplier and Furetank’s leadership in operating one of the region’s most environmentally advanced fleets.
“HVO is more than a transitional fuel — it’s a practical, immediately deployable solution,” ScanOcean shared. “We’re proud to support Furetank and other forward-thinking shipowners who are taking real action to reduce emissions now, not later.”
The collaboration is emblematic of a broader shift taking place across Scandinavian waters, where partnerships between fuel providers and progressive shipowners are driving measurable change.
100 Renewable Deliveries — and Counting
These latest operations follows a major milestone for ScanOcean earlier this year in 2025, when the company announced it had completed its 100th renewable bunkering operation since launching its green fuel offerings in 2022.
“The shipping industry has now started its transition to a greener future, and ScanOcean is at the forefront,” said Christoffer Ahlqvist, Head of Trading at ScanOcean, in a statement shared on LinkedIn. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and look forward to what lies ahead.”
The achievement reflects growing demand for alternative fuels and ScanOcean’s ability to meet it—through strategic partnerships, strong logistics, and an early focus on certification and compliance.
ScanOcean: A Renewable Focus in a Traditional Sector
While established in its current form in 2013, ScanOcean traces its roots back to a Scandinavian purchasing group and operates today as part of the Ivar Lundh & Co group, a Swedish shipping name dating back to 1912. The company acts as both a physical supplier in Swedish ports and a global bunker trader, with a growing emphasis on renewable and co-processed fuels.
Its partnerships with producers such as Neste have positioned it at the forefront of sustainable marine fuel distribution in Northern Europe. Recent operations have included the supply of HVO- and RME-blended MGO fuels, as well as co-processed DMA grades, designed to help vessels meet Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) targets and reduce EU ETS exposure.
Donsö Shipping Meet: A Fitting Backdrop
The Donsö Shipping Meet continues to serve as an influential gathering point for maritime innovation and collaboration. With the industry’s eyes fixed on regulatory timelines and carbon targets, this year’s edition offered a timely stage for initiatives like ScanOcean’s — ones that demonstrate not only ambition but action.
As more shipowners seek cost-effective and compliant fuel strategies, deliveries such as this signal a clear message: low-carbon solutions are not just concepts for the future — they are fueling ships today.
