Sarnen, Switzerland | September 30, 2025 — Sallaum Lines, a leading name in European automotive Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) logistics, has celebrated MV Ocean Breeze, the first in a groundbreaking series of six next-generation LNG dual-fuel Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs).
The vessel was officially handed over on July 18, 2025, by Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding in China — an achievement made all the more remarkable by the completion of construction four months ahead of schedule. The delivery of the 7,500 Car Equivalent Unit (CEU) vessel represents a major step forward in Sallaum Lines’ commitment to decarbonizing global automotive transport and modernizing its fleet for a low-emission future.
Flagship of a Greener Generation
The MV Ocean Breeze stands at the forefront of green maritime technology, purpose-built to meet surging demand for the global transport of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) while aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) most stringent decarbonization targets.
Key Technical and Operational Features:
- Dual-Fuel Propulsion: The vessel is powered by an advanced LNG dual-fuel main engine, delivering a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO) or very low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO). LNG significantly cuts sulfur oxides (SOₓ), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and particulate matter, establishing it as a vital transition fuel in the maritime sector.
- Optimized Dimensions & Flexibility: Measuring 199.9 meters in length and 38 meters in beam, the Ocean Breeze is equipped with 13 flexible vehicle decks. This configuration allows for an efficient mix of passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, and the rapidly increasing volume of electric and new energy vehicles — including hazardous battery cargo.
- Safety & Compliance: Classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the vessel is engineered to exceed current and forthcoming IMO requirements. It features fully electric RoRo systems and an ultra-low-emission profile, ensuring regulatory compliance well into the next decade.
Sino-European Collaboration Driving Maritime Innovation
The delivery of the Ocean Breeze reflects a deepening industrial partnership between European maritime expertise and China’s shipbuilding excellence. It underscores how international cooperation is redefining the shipbuilding landscape to address global sustainability goals.
Financial backing for the project was structured through Chinese institutions, with Shenzhen Capital Group Co., Ltd. playing a pivotal role in providing tailored leasing solutions. The arrangement highlights China’s growing role in supporting sustainable fleet renewal and infrastructure financing for global operators.
“Our relationship with Chinese partners is rooted in trust, performance, and a shared commitment to sustainable maritime development,” said Mr. Sami Sallaum, Chairman of Sallaum Lines. “The Ocean Breeze is not just a vessel — it’s a symbol of how innovation and international collaboration can accelerate the transformation of global shipping.”
Strategic Expansion in the Asia-Pacific Automotive Supply Chain
The Ocean Breeze’s delivery marks the first tangible milestone in Sallaum Lines’ comprehensive Asia-Pacific growth strategy, designed to support the booming export capacity of China’s automotive OEMs.
This strategic initiative includes:
- Fleet Expansion: A confirmed order for six additional LNG dual-fuel PCTCs from Chinese shipyards, including Fujian Mawei and CMHI Jinling, ensuring significant low-emission capacity through 2027.
- Regional Hub Development: The recent establishment of Sallaum Lines’ new operational office in Shanghai, enhancing direct logistical support for Chinese automakers and strengthening the company’s Asia-Pacific network.
- Long-Term Collaboration: Continued cooperation with Chinese stakeholders across shipbuilding, financing, and operational services to sustain long-term fleet modernization and low-carbon growth.
As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to deliver on net-zero commitments, Sallaum Lines’ investment reinforces the commercial viability of LNG as a practical bridge toward a decarbonized future. The MV Ocean Breeze will now enter active service, embodying a new era of clean, efficient, and globally connected automotive transport.
