Rohe Solutions LNG Bunkering in Finland

Rohe Solutions, a leading Finland-based LNG supplier, has demonstrated its expertise in LNG bunkering with a successful operation at Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) shipyard in Finland. The Finnish shipyard, known for its specialization in building car and passenger ferries, naval vessels, and icebreakers, collaborated with Rohe to ensure the smooth LNG bunkering of the MS Spirit of Tasmania IV.

LNG Bunkering Tests as Part of Vessel Handover Preparations

The MS Spirit of Tasmania IV, a car and passenger ferry bound for Australian operations, was in its final stages of preparation before being handed over to its owner in September 2024. As part of the vessel’s rigorous testing and safety protocols, the ship needed to undergo a full-capacity LNG bunkering test. This critical operation aimed to evaluate the safety mechanisms and ensure smooth bunkering under operational conditions.

Rauma Marine Constructions sought a reliable LNG supplier capable of delivering nearly 800 cubic meters of LNG within a strict 72-hour timeframe to keep the vessel’s finishing schedule on track.

Collaboration for Precision and Safety

Rohe Solutions, a subsidiary of Alexela, was chosen for the task. Equipped with high-capacity LNG trailers, Rohe’s team ensured a 100% reliable delivery despite the logistical challenge of transporting LNG from Hamina, nearly 400 kilometers away.

Rohe’s Sales Manager, Mikko Korpinen, emphasized the importance of planning and professionalism in such operations:
“Delivering LNG across Finland is not just about distance. It’s about addressing every detail to guarantee reliability and safety, which is at the heart of our operations.”

Prior to the bunkering operation, Rohe staff conducted a thorough site assessment at the RMC shipyard. This included mapping out the pier area and addressing safety protocols, such as prohibiting hot or electrical work during bunkering to eliminate ignition risks.

Four Days of Precision-Driven Bunkering

The bunkering operation took place over four days during the summer, with three LNG trailers arriving daily from Thursday to Sunday. The process required careful preparation, including drying and cooling the ferry’s LNG tanks.

Toni Haapanen, System Responsible for LNG Systems at Rauma Marine Constructions, praised the seamless execution:
“The entire process went down smoothly, thanks to Rohe’s seasoned professionals and excellent communication. The meetings before and after the operation ensured transparency and allowed us to provide feedback for future operations.”

Rohe handled all necessary equipment, including hoses, fittings, and manifolds, ensuring a hassle-free experience for RMC. Minor issues were addressed promptly, reflecting the team’s commitment to professionalism and safety.
