PRIO ECO Bunkers Supply at Portuguese Ports

In a significant move toward reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry, PRIO, a leading energy company in Portugal, is driving change by advancing maritime decarbonization. Through its focus on sustainability, PRIO is playing a pivotal role in reducing not only its own carbon footprint but also that of its partners. By integrating biofuels into the supply chain, PRIO is providing eco-friendly fuel solutions to ships calling at any port in Portugal.

March Biofuel Deliveries to Briese Chartering Mark Key Milestones

In March 2025, PRIO achieved a notable milestone with the successful delivery of Eco Bunkers B30 fuel to Briese Chartering GmbH & Co. KG, a respected shipowner known for its strong environmental legacy. The two refueling operations were carried out in partnership with UFS United Fuel Services GmbH & Co. KG, a key collaborator in the supply chain for sustainable maritime fuel.

PRIO’s Eco Bunkers B30 product, containing 30% renewable raw materials, played a crucial role in supporting Briese Chartering’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a cleaner, more sustainable future for shipping.

A Green Future: Two Successful Eco Bunker Supplies in March

The collaboration between PRIO and Briese Chartering was solidified in early March with two significant deliveries of Eco Bunkers B30 fuel. On March 3, the vessel BBC Lisbon was fueled at the Port of Aveiro, followed by the fueling of the vessel ANNA on March 18 at the Port of Leixões. Through these two deliveries, PRIO enabled Briese Chartering to reduce approximately 60 tons of CO2 emissions in just two port calls in Portugal.

PRIO’s Biofuel Solutions: A Key Player in Decarbonizing Maritime Transport

The biofuel used for these deliveries was produced at PRIO’s state-of-the-art biodiesel plant located at the Port of Aveiro. PRIO’s biodiesel has an impressive greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential of up to 88% compared to traditional fossil fuels. This makes it a critical solution for shipowners and operators looking to meet stricter environmental regulations while lowering their carbon footprint.

For PRIO, this is not a one-off initiative. Over the years, the company has supplied sustainable biofuel products with varying levels of renewable content (ranging from 1% to 100% renewable raw materials) to vessels in all Portuguese ports, reinforcing its commitment to driving maritime decarbonization.

A Shared Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

The partnership between PRIO, Briese Chartering, and UFS United Fuel Services showcases a shared commitment to achieving long-term carbon neutrality in the maritime industry. As global shipping faces mounting pressure to reduce its environmental impact, these collaborations stand as testament to the industry’s growing focus on sustainability. The successful delivery of Eco Bunkers B30 fuel is just one example of how the maritime industry is embracing biofuels as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Telmo Ferreira, Head of Emerging Businesses and Shipping at PRIO, emphasized the company’s dedication not only to maritime decarbonization but also to fostering collaborative partnerships that accelerate industry-wide sustainability efforts.

“At PRIO, we understand that achieving a greener future requires collective action,” Ferreira explained. “Alongside promoting the integration of biofuels in the supply chain, we are dedicated to collaborating with partners to offer sustainable solutions, such as our ECO Bunkers biofuel blend, to ships calling at all major ports in Portugal. In doing so, we are making a significant contribution to maritime decarbonization while providing the shipping industry with an accessible green alternative. This ongoing commitment to innovation and collaboration reflects PRIO’s efforts in advancing toward carbon neutrality.”

PRIO: Leading the Way in Sustainable Energy Solutions

PRIO is a recognized leader in Portugal’s energy sector, known for its innovative approach to sustainable energy solutions. The company operates across the entire energy value chain, including through its subsidiary, PRIO Biocombustíveis. At the heart of its operations is the biodiesel facility located at the Port of Aveiro, which has an annual production capacity of 113,880 tons. This facility positions PRIO as one of the largest biodiesel producers in Portugal and a key player in supporting the maritime sector’s transition to cleaner energy.

With continued investments in cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships, PRIO is committed to supplying the most sustainable and effective biofuel solutions to meet the evolving needs of the maritime industry. As the world moves toward a more sustainable future, PRIO is at the forefront of driving positive change and fostering a greener energy landscape for both the shipping and energy sectors.

A Stronger Future Through Sustainable Partnerships

The ongoing collaboration between PRIO, Briese Chartering, and UFS – United Fuel Services is a promising step in the journey toward a carbon-neutral maritime industry. Through these efforts, PRIO continues to demonstrate its leadership in supporting the shipping industry’s transition to sustainable fuel alternatives. As more companies in the maritime sector embrace biofuels, the path toward a greener, more sustainable future becomes clearer, setting the stage for lasting change across the global shipping landscape.
