PRIO, a leading energy company in Portugal, is taking significant strides toward maritime decarbonization through its biofuel initiatives at the Port of Aveiro. As global shipping faces increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, PRIO is leveraging its expertise to offer sustainable solutions to vessels calling at the port.
On September 25, World Fuel Services fueled the TC MT barge “WHITDAWN,” owned by John H. Whitaker (Tankers) Limited, with ECO Bunkers B15, a biofuel blend containing renewable components that cut GHG emissions by up to 88%. This milestone marks a crucial step in PRIO’s mission to integrate biofuels into the maritime supply chain. The operation, conducted at Pier 26 Bridge, underscores the port’s importance in receiving advanced raw materials for biodiesel production.
The sustainability of this operation is further validated by the documentation provided to the vessel, adhering to both European Union and International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. This emphasizes PRIO’s ongoing commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Telmo Ferreira, Head of Emerging Businesses and Shipping at PRIO, emphasized the company’s focus on driving the industry toward a greener future. “In order to reduce the carbon footprint, PRIO promotes the integration of biofuels in the supply chain by offering sustainable solutions for ships that call at the Port of Aveiro. ” Ferreira said. “We are proud to extend the supply of our ECO Bunkers biofuel blend to all major ports in Portugal, further supporting maritime decarbonization and providing an accessible green alternative for the shipping industry. this commitment to sustainability is a testament to PRIO’s leadership in the long road toward carbon neutrality.”
PRIO’s efforts align with broader maritime decarbonization goals, ensuring that ships operating in European waters have access to biofuels that significantly reduce emissions without compromising operational efficiency.
