Portland Port has launched a new LNG ship-to-ship transfer service, enhancing its bunkering capabilities for vessels in the English Channel. Learn how this strategic expansion streamlines supply chains and supports lower-carbon maritime operations.
Portland, Dorset | April 21, 2026 – Portland Port has officially marked a significant operational milestone, announcing full approval to conduct Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) ship-to-ship (STS) transfers. This expansion of service capabilities reinforces the port’s status as a critical bunkering hub for vessels traversing the English Channel.
Already a well-established facility for oil and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) transfers, the addition of LNG infrastructure allows the port to streamline the supply chain for operators transitioning toward lower-carbon fuel solutions. With its strategic location, situated just 20 miles north of the primary English Channel shipping lanes, the port is positioned to significantly reduce transit times for vessels requiring refueling.
Strategic Growth at 30 Years
This milestone coincides with a landmark year for the facility, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary as a privately operated commercial entity. The introduction of LNG bunkering services reflects a broader commitment to evolving alongside the maritime industry’s shifting energy demands.
“Our new STS licence means that we can now support LNG transfers directly at our port,” said Ian McQuade, Commercial Director at Portland Port. “It will help reduce transit times and streamline operations for the LNG supply chain while providing access to a fully compliant and experienced marine infrastructure.”
McQuade emphasized that safety and reliability remain the primary drivers of this expansion. “With our strategic location and our well-established record in licensed and fully compliant STS transfer operations, we hope to work closely with customers to support their commercial and operational objectives.”
Operational Flexibility
The new service offers significant operational flexibility, with STS operations authorized to take place either alongside one of the port’s dedicated berths or at anchor in the inner or outer harbour. The port authority has confirmed that all transfers will be conducted under strict regulatory compliance, ensuring the safe handling of LNG, which is cooled to approximately -161°C for transport.
As the maritime industry continues to evaluate its energy mix, LNG has emerged as a key transition fuel, producing 30% fewer CO2 emissions than traditional oil-based fuels. By providing the infrastructure to support this shift, Portland Port is positioning itself as a vital link for shipowners navigating the complexities of decarbonization.
