Port of Southampton Hosts Fortescue Green Pioneer

The Port of Southampton recently witnessed a groundbreaking demonstration in maritime decarbonisation, with the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia-powered vessel, the Fortescue Green Pioneer, completing a historic demonstration of ammonia fuel usage. This marks a significant milestone not only for the UK but for Europe as well, as the vessel showcased its operational safety, regulatory compliance, and crew training necessary for the operation of ammonia-powered ships.

This demonstration is a major step forward in the push for zero-carbon shipping fuels. Ammonia, when produced using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydropower, and geothermal energy, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional marine fuels. This process, known as ammonia synthesis, combines nitrogen and hydrogen to produce ammonia, also referred to as “green ammonia.” As a zero-carbon fuel, ammonia holds the potential to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for global shipping.

A Milestone for the Port of Southampton

The Fortescue Green Pioneer made its inaugural visit to the UK at the Port of Southampton on Saturday, where it was warmly welcomed. The vessel had undergone a series of regulatory inspections in the days leading up to the demonstration. The Port of Southampton has long been at the forefront of sustainability in the maritime industry, and the visit of the Fortescue Green Pioneer serves as another example of its leadership in advancing green maritime technologies.

Steve Masters, the Harbour Master for the Port of Southampton, expressed his pride in the port being chosen as the first European destination for the vessel. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with Fortescue, the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), and other stakeholders in ensuring a successful demonstration of ammonia-powered shipping. Masters stated, “This marks a significant advancement in maritime decarbonisation, and it is exciting to see the Port of Southampton leading the way in accommodating vessels powered by greener fuels.”

Fortescue’s Vision for a Greener Shipping Future

Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, Executive Chairman and Founder of Fortescue, made a bold statement during the demonstration, emphasizing the real-time viability of ammonia as a sustainable fuel for shipping. “We have brought the Fortescue Green Pioneer to the UK to deliver a simple message: the technology for green ammonia-powered shipping engines exists now,” he said. Dr. Forrest pointed out that the vessel serves as a testament to Fortescue’s commitment to eliminating fossil fuels from the shipping industry, noting that ammonia-powered shipping could play a pivotal role in decarbonising global shipping.

He also encouraged global shipping regulators, especially those at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), to take swift action and adopt Real Zero fuel standards to fast-track the transition from traditional bunker fuels to cleaner alternatives. “With the right character and leadership, they can chart a course towards a more sustainable future for the planet and advance a dramatic reduction in shipping costs through the widespread adoption and scaling of renewable sources,” he added.

MCA’s Role in Ensuring Safety and Operational Readiness

Lars Lippuner, Director of UK Customer Services at the MCA, emphasized the importance of decarbonisation in the UK’s maritime sector and praised the Fortescue Green Pioneer for successfully demonstrating what a future of cleaner shipping could look like. “The MCA will conduct thorough inspections and checks to ensure the vessel’s safety and operational readiness for its onward journey,” Lippuner remarked. He also expressed his excitement about the vessel’s European debut and the collaboration with Fortescue to bring this innovative technology to the UK.

The Port of Southampton’s Green Maritime Agenda

The arrival of the Fortescue Green Pioneer is just one of many steps the Port of Southampton is taking in its efforts to promote green maritime technologies. The next key event on the port’s agenda is the Maritime UK Solent Coastal Powerhouse event, which will feature prominent speakers, including the Minister for Aviation, Maritime, and Security, Mike Kane. The event will also include a panel discussion on port sustainability and seminars on Clean Maritime and Autonomous Maritime. One of the major highlights of the event will be the EVA Southampton Innovation Exchange, a collaboration between ABP and innovation platform and investor, Plug and Play.

The EVA Southampton Innovation Exchange is part of ABP’s ambitious £2B green growth and decarbonisation plans, with a particular focus on maritime decarbonisation. The day will showcase cutting-edge innovations and collaboration opportunities, solidifying Southampton’s role as a key hub for the UK’s energy transition and green maritime future.

A Greener Future for Shipping: Fortescue Leads the Charge

Fortescue’s Green Pioneer initiative stands as a powerful testament to the urgency of transitioning to sustainable fuels in the shipping industry. As ammonia emerges as the leading solution for decarbonization, the maritime sector is poised to make a profound contribution to global efforts against climate change, securing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for shipping worldwide.

Fortescue in Brief

Fortescue is a globally renowned West Australian company that has established itself as a leader in innovation, culture, and infrastructure development, particularly in the mining sector. As one of the world’s lowest-cost iron ore producers, Fortescue ships over 180 million tonnes of iron ore annually. Through its green energy and technology subsidiary, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), the company is rapidly transitioning to become a fully integrated global green energy and resources provider. Fortescue has set ambitious targets to achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2040, making it one of the most proactive companies in the world in terms of emissions reduction.

As the shipping industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, the demonstration of the Fortescue Green Pioneer in Southampton is a key step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for global maritime transportation.
