The Port of Antwerp-Bruges continues to be lauded for its commitment to sustainable energy practices, securing the prestigious ISO 50001 certification for the fourth consecutive time. This recognition reaffirms the Port Authority’s unwavering dedication to environmentally conscious operations. Notably, this certification now extends to include Zeebrugge, marking a significant milestone following the merger just two years prior.

Since 2011, the Port Authority has sourced all electricity for its buildings, locks, bridges, and inland navigation ships from renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the hybrid patrol vessels and a portion of the tugboat fleet run on renewable fuels, with plans underway to introduce the first electric tugboat soon. The Port Authority’s proactive approach to electrifying its vehicle fleet and promoting energy neutrality in its infrastructure has yielded substantial savings over the past decade.

Key achievements include

  • A 9.6% reduction in gasoline costs for the Port’s fleet.
  • A remarkable 64.8% decrease in natural gas expenses for heating buildings.
  • A 33.8% cut in electricity costs for buildings and public lighting.
  • A 27.5% reduction in electricity expenses for bridges and locks.

Rob Smeets, COO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges said “A sustainability policy is not a short-term story. We have actually been working for years to ensure that our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050 is translated into specific actions and measures. We also have the courage to experiment with innovative technologies based on trial and error, so we are very pleased that this audacity is being rewarded once again.”
