The Port of Barcelona has granted Baleària a 27-year concession to construct and operate a new €25.3 million ferry terminal on the Adossat quay. Spanning 75,000 m² with four simultaneous docking points, the facility will integrate Onshore Power Supply (OPS) and solar energy to enhance maritime sustainability and operational efficiency.
Barcelona | March 25, 2026 – The Board of Directors of the Port of Barcelona has formally approved a long-term concession for Baleària to construct and operate a dedicated passenger and ro-ro terminal on the Adossat quay. The project, representing an investment of €25.3 million, marks a strategic consolidation for the shipping line, which has operated across fragmented areas of the port since 2003.
The 27-year concession (with options to extend) follows a period of public inquiry initiated after Baleària’s initial request in late 2024. The new terminal is designed to streamline maritime mobility between the Spanish mainland and Mediterranean hubs while setting a new benchmark for port sustainability.
Infrastructure and Operational Scale
The future terminal will eventually span 75,250 m², featuring a 5,600 m² trapezoidal terminal building for offices, passenger services, and logistics. Key infrastructure highlights include:
- Four Berthing Points: Capability for four ro-ro ships to dock simultaneously in its final configuration.
- Logistics Hub: Dedicated waiting areas for trucks and cars, alongside a specialized semi-trailer depot.
- Phased Launch: The first phase (38,000 m²) is scheduled to begin operations in February 2027, with the full site becoming operational by the end of 2029.
Commitment to “Green” Energy
In line with global maritime decarbonization trends, the project incorporates significant environmental infrastructure. The terminal will feature dedicated space for Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, allowing vessels to shut down auxiliary engines and connect to the local grid while at berth. Additionally, the facility will utilize photovoltaic panels for on-site electricity generation, reducing the terminal’s overall carbon footprint.
