Pacific International Lines (PIL) is advancing its fleet renewal strategy with the recent order of five new container vessels, each with a 13,000 TEU capacity and equipped with cutting-edge liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel engines. The vessels, which will be neo panamax-sized, are scheduled for progressive delivery starting from the end of 2026. Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard, a prominent Chinese shipbuilder, has been awarded the construction contract for these state-of-the-art vessels.
These new vessels are designed with a strong emphasis on efficiency, safety, and sustainability. They feature dual-fuel engines and auxiliaries capable of operating on both LNG and low sulphur fuel oil, offering flexibility to accommodate various voyage requirements, weather conditions, and load capacities. The modern design includes advanced technological and energy-saving features, such as an optimised hull-form, variable-frequency drive (VFD) motors for larger pumps and ventilation blowers, low-energy LED lighting, and premium hull coatings. Upon completion, these vessels will meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new builds and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).
Mr. Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, highlighted the significance of this investment, stating “These latest orders are part of PIL’s fleet renewal strategy for larger and more eco-friendly vessel types. Together with the eight vessels currently under construction, we now have 13 new vessels that will contribute significantly towards our decarbonisation goal of net zero emissions by 2050.”
“As part of our commitment to putting customers first, we are continually optimising our fleet with newer and more advanced vessels to better serve customers in our key markets. For instance, the vessels will have a high refrigerated container capacity payload to support our services for the transport of fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, meat, and pharmaceuticals.” He Added.
Incorporating increased digitalisation, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), the new vessels will enhance automation, operational efficiency, safety, and seafarer welfare. These digital advancements will also aid PIL’s Centre for Maritime Efficiency in optimising vessel operations and routes, boosting safety and security, and reducing energy consumption.
Currently, PIL is also constructing four 14,000 TEU and four 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels, with the first two of the 14,000 TEU vessels expected to be delivered later this year. This latest order of innovative vessels underscores PIL’s commitment to leveraging expertise and technology to deliver efficient and sustainable shipping solutions.
