NYK Bulkship Install Wind Tech on vessel

NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) N.V., a key subsidiary of NYK Group, has successfully installed two state-of-the-art wind-assisted ship-propulsion units on its bulk carrier, NBA Magritte, at the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands. This installation marks the inaugural use of such units on an NYK Group vessel. The NBA Magritte is currently operating under a long-term charter with Cargill (USA).

The newly installed units feature VentoFoil technology, which is positioned on a 20-foot-long (approximately 6-meter) flat rack container. Each VentoFoil unit boasts a 16-meter vertical wing designed to act as a suction sail, generating about five times more force compared to traditional no-suction versions.

NYK Bulkship’s Bulk Carrier Features of VentoFoil include:
  • Enhanced Propulsion: The VentoFoil creates propulsion by exploiting the pressure difference on either side of the wing, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during navigation.
  • Suction Port: It captures wind through a suction port, enhancing propulsion by amplifying the pressure difference.
  • User-Friendly Operation: The system can be easily activated or deactivated via a touch panel installed on the bridge, ensuring seamless operation without additional workload for the crew.
  • Compact Design: The system is smaller than other wind-assisted technologies, facilitating easy installation and relocation.
  • Quick Folding: The units can be folded within 5 to 6 minutes, allowing unobstructed cargo handling.

NBAtlantic plans to collect comprehensive data on the propulsion performance, as well as meteorological and ocean conditions during voyages, to assess the effectiveness of the VentoFoil units. This data will be analyzed in collaboration with Cargill International Inc. and NYK’s R&D subsidiary, MTI Co., Ltd.

This initiative is aligned with NYK’s long-term objective of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 for its oceangoing operations. The NYK Group aims to leverage insights gained from this project to advance various energy-saving technologies, including wind power.

In March 2023, the NYK Group unveiled its medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 — A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” This strategy emphasizes ESG-centric growth and aligns with the Group’s vision of “Bringing value to life” and its 2030 corporate goal of creating value through both core and new business areas.

This advancement is part of NYK’s “Sail GREEN” initiative, reflecting its commitment to reducing GHG emissions through innovative transport solutions and supporting customers in achieving eco-friendly supply chains, across all modes of transport.
