Norsepower’s continuous force measurement technology for Rotor Sails has been independently validated by research institute RISE during six-month sea trials on the MV Chinook Oldendorff. This breakthrough proves the viability of direct thrust tracking under the IMO’s Tier IV framework, providing shipowners and charterers with auditable, real-time performance data to verify fuel savings and resolve split incentives.
Helsinki, Finland | July 22, 2026 – Norsepower, the global market leader in mechanical sails for commercial shipping, has achieved a critical milestone in wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) transparency. The company announced that its proprietary continuous force measurement technology has been independently validated by RISE (SSPA Maritime Centre), one of the maritime industry’s most respected research and technology infrastructures.
The evaluation was conducted aboard the bulk carrier MV Chinook Oldendorff, which is fitted with three Norsepower Rotor Sails™. The verification marks one of the world’s first third-party validations of a continuous, real-time performance monitoring system for wind-assisted marine propulsion.
Solving the WASP Performance Challenge
While wind propulsion has gained massive momentum as a primary decarbonization tool, direct, continuous quantification of the actual thrust generated by a sail device at sea has historically proven difficult.
To overcome this hurdle, Norsepower engineered a proprietary measurement system utilizing high-precision pressure sensors integrated directly into the rotor sail structures. To rigorously verify the tech:
- Six-Month Operational Testing: Norsepower and RISE monitored the MV Chinook Oldendorff over six months of normal commercial operations, running extensive “on/off” baseline trials.
- Independent Conversion Methodology: RISE applied its own performance assessment models to convert measured thrust forces into verified vessel power savings.
- Data Correlation: The results proved that Norsepower’s internal force measurements remained consistently stable over time and strongly correlated with real-world energy savings.
“The measurements demonstrated good stability throughout the test period. Combined with initial calibration using on/off testing, this provides a promising solution for quantifying WASP energy savings over time,” said Sofia Werner, Head of Strategic Development at RISE SSPA Maritime Centre.
Alignment with IMO GHG Fuel Intensity (GFI) Framework
The timing of this validation coincides with pivotal regulatory shifts within the International Maritime Organization (IMO). As global regulators finalize the GHG Fuel Intensity (GFI) framework, ocean carriers will require verifiable, auditable performance data to prove real-world emissions reductions.
Direct continuous thrust measurement represents the highest tier (Tier IV) of proposed methodologies submitted to the IMO for assessing wind propulsion performance under GFI regulations.
- Direct Pressure Sensor Measurement: Integrated sensors capture real-time physical pressure changes on the rotor sails.
- Continuous Real-Time Thrust Data: Operational systems process instant, uninterrupted thrust measurements generated by the wind propulsion unit.
- Independent Conversion: Third-party methodologies (such as RISE) convert physical thrust data into verified vessel power savings.
- IMO GFI Compliance Audit: Auditable, field-proven data is submitted to satisfy the highest tier (Tier IV) of the IMO’s GHG Fuel Intensity framework.
Norsepower’s sea trials confirm that Tier IV verification is no longer merely theoretical, but a field-proven, operational tool ready for commercial deployment.
Unlocking New Commercial and Chartering Models
Beyond regulatory compliance, transparent thrust measurement addresses a longstanding friction point in commercial chartering: the split incentive between shipowners and charterers.
With accurate, tamper-proof, and independently validated performance data, stakeholders can now structure equitable commercial agreements based on verified fuel savings:
- Transparent Gain-Sharing: Shipowners can justify capital expenditures (CapEx) by sharing verified fuel savings data with charterers.
- Charterparty Certainty: Charterers gain real-time visibility into speed-and-consumption performance during wind-assisted voyages.
- Built-in Trust: Removes reliance on theoretical mathematical modeling in favor of live sensor data.
“Our force measurement third-party validation demonstrates how the whole industry benefits when we can independently prove that wind propulsion performance can be measured accurately and consistently,” stated Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower. “That’s what will build the trust needed for wind propulsion to scale.”
About Norsepower
Norsepower is a Finnish clean technology company and a pioneer in modern wind propulsion. Its patented Norsepower Rotor Sail™ is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor, using the Magnus effect to harness wind power and provide auxiliary thrust. The technology can typically reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 5% to 25%, depending on the wind conditions and vessel type.
