Norsepower and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (CHIC) have signed a comprehensive agreement to scale the production, installation, and global service of Norsepower Rotor Sails™. By integrating Norsepower’s wind propulsion technology with CHIC’s massive manufacturing capacity, the partners aim to meet surging global demand for fuel-efficient, low-emission shipping solutions.
Finland | March 26, 2026 – In a move designed to transition wind-assisted propulsion from bespoke installations to global fleet-scale adoption, Norsepower and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (CHIC) have signed a definitive long-term cooperation agreement.
The deal, signed by Norsepower CEO Heikki Pöntynen and the General Manager of CHIC, builds upon a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). It establishes a robust framework for collaboration across the entire rotor sail value chain, including large-scale manufacturing, joint engineering, global sales, and lifecycle services.
Scaling for a Decarbonized Market
As shipowners face tightening environmental regulations and the need for immediate fuel efficiency gains, the demand for Norsepower’s mechanical sails has reached a tipping point. To maintain its technological lead, Norsepower is leveraging CHIC’s world-class manufacturing infrastructure and global service network.
The collaboration focuses on:
- Integrated Production: Combining Norsepower’s intelligent control systems with CHIC’s high-volume shipyard equipment manufacturing.
- Installation & Service: Utilizing CHIC’s mature global network to streamline the retrofitting of rotor sails on existing vessels and integration into newbuilds.
- Joint R&D: Advancing the next generation of wind propulsion technology through shared engineering resources.
Leadership Perspectives
Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower said “The demand for wind propulsion is growing rapidly as shipowners seek practical and proven ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Expanding high-quality production capacity is therefore essential. By deepening our cooperation with CHIC, we are creating a strong foundation for scaling Norsepower Rotor Sail™ production and accelerating adoption across global fleets.”
General Manager of CHIC said “CHIC has long focused on energy efficiency and delivering green equipment solutions. Norsepower brings proven technology and a strong market position. With our complementary strengths, we are confident this collaboration will deliver more efficient and reliable wind propulsion solutions, contributing to the industry’s decarbonization goals.”
A Shared Vision for a Low-Carbon Future
By bringing together Norsepower’s cutting-edge wind propulsion systems with CHIC’s shipbuilding and infrastructure capabilities, this partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to accelerating the adoption of sustainable technologies in global shipping.
The agreement reinforces both companies’ strategic focus on supporting the energy transition in maritime transport, aligning with the broader industry shift toward environmentally responsible operations.
