In a landmark move that signals the next chapter in sustainable port operations across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Noatum Maritime, part of AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, has announced two major investments in fully electric vessel technology. The company has acquired the region’s first all-electric hydrofoiling pilot boat and two zero-emission electric tugboats, marking a bold step forward in decarbonising port operations in the Middle East.
These strategic acquisitions represent key components of Noatum Maritime’s broader environmental and operational transformation, supporting not only carbon reduction goals but also enhanced efficiency, performance, and long-term cost savings for its clients.

First of Its Kind in the GCC: Artemis EF-12 Electric Hydrofoiling Pilot Boat
Leading this green transition is the Artemis EF-12 Pilot, a 12-metre electric vessel powered by cutting-edge eFoiler® technology from UK-based Artemis Technologies. The vessel uses hydrofoils to lift its hull above water during transit, which reduces drag, improves speed, and cuts energy consumption by up to 85% compared to traditional pilot boats.
The EF-12 is not just an engineering innovation—it’s a practical, customer-centric solution. It offers zero-emission pilotage, reduced fuel and maintenance costs, and performance capabilities that rival or exceed conventional vessels. Its introduction in the GCC marks a regional first, establishing Noatum Maritime as a technological trailblazer in energy-efficient pilotage.
Damen Electric Tugboats: Guinness-Recognised Power Meets Zero Emissions
Further solidifying its commitment to sustainable harbour operations, Noatum Maritime has also confirmed the purchase of two Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 units—among the most powerful electric tugboats in the world. One of the units, already successfully trialled, is recognised by Guinness World Records for its power output.
The tugboats, each offering 70 tonnes of bollard pull, feature rapid charging capabilities and can perform multiple port operations on a single charge. With recharging times as short as two hours, they represent a seamless transition from fossil fuel-powered towage to zero-emission, high-performance harbour assistance.
The first electric tug is already operational at Khalifa Port, with the second unit scheduled to enter service by April 2025. These tugs are expected to significantly reduce emissions at port, support green port initiatives, and deliver long-term cost-efficiency for port operations and vessel operators alike.
Leadership Commentary: Commitment to Innovation and Environmental Impact
Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO – Maritime & Shipping Cluster, AD Ports Group, emphasized the strategic significance of these advancements:
“By investing in zero-emission pilotage and harbour operations, Noatum Maritime is delivering a cleaner, more efficient solution that reduces the environmental footprint of port operations, drives long-term cost savings and also benefits our customers. By offering fully electric alternatives, we are supporting our customers’ sustainability goals and potentially enabling them to leverage carbon credits.”
“In pioneering these technologies, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainable innovation and setting new benchmarks for the industry.”
Driving the Green Transition in Port Infrastructure
With these acquisitions, Noatum Maritime positions itself as a pioneer in electric vessel deployment within the GCC, aligning closely with international maritime decarbonisation efforts such as IMO 2030 and 2050 goals. The move complements AD Ports Group’s wider sustainability initiatives and reflects the group’s investment in future-ready, environmentally responsible port infrastructure.
These electric vessels also contribute to a circular economy approach, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, enabling integration with carbon credit systems, and offering new options for clients prioritizing ESG compliance and net-zero targets.
As more ports and operators across the Middle East accelerate their energy transition strategies, Noatum Maritime’s electric fleet serves as a model for scalable, operationally viable zero-emission maritime technology. The initiative sets the stage for broader adoption of clean maritime solutions, positioning the company and the region at the forefront of sustainable shipping.
