Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) has partnered with maritime technology leader ZeroNorth to completely digitize and streamline its global bunker fuel procurement process across its fleet.
Copenhagen | July 9, 2026 – Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH) has partnered with maritime technology company ZeroNorth to digitize and optimize bunker fuel procurement across its global fleet, marking another significant step in the cruise operator’s digital transformation and decarbonization strategy.
Under the agreement, NCLH will implement ZeroNorth’s Bunker Procurement platform across its 35-ship fleet, replacing traditional manual procurement processes with a centralized digital solution that combines live fuel pricing, automated procurement workflows, electronic bunker documentation, and integrated carbon-cost analysis.
The deployment is designed to improve procurement transparency, strengthen operational efficiency, and support increasingly complex regulatory compliance as shipping transitions toward lower-carbon operations.
Bringing Digital Intelligence to Bunker Procurement
For cargo shipping, bunkering is typically dictated by fixed trade lanes or tramper routes. For a global cruise operator like NCLH, however, the variables multiply exponentially. Managing fuel logistics for a modern cruise fleet requires balancing strict port arrival schedules, rigid guest itineraries, regional environmental mandates, and localized supplier constraints. The sheer scale of NCLH’s operations underscores the stakes:
- Active Fleet: 35 modern, world-class ships.
- Passenger Capacity: Approximately 75,000 berths, serving over 3 million guests annually.
- Global Footprint: Over 700 destinations worldwide, ranging from ultra-luxury remote ports to high-traffic private destinations like Great Stirrup Cay.
- The Growth Runway: A massive capital expenditure program featuring 16 new ships on order through 2037, which will add over 43,000 berths to the fleet and significantly expand its energy footprint.
Lory Urdaneta, Senior Director of Energy Strategy at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, said:
“At Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, we are committed to embracing innovative technologies that strengthen our operations and deliver long-term value. Our partnership with ZeroNorth is an important step in enhancing our bunker procurement process through greater transparency, data-driven decision-making, and operational efficiencies.”
End-to-End Digital Procurement
ZeroNorth’s platform digitizes the complete bunker purchasing process, covering planning, supplier quotations, delivery verification, electronic bunker delivery notes (eBDNs), claims management, and compliance reporting.
Planning -> RFQ & Procurement -> Delivery Verification -> eBDN Integration -> Claims Management -> Audit & Governance
Key capabilities include:
- Fleet-wide bunker planning based on voyage requirements.
- Automated Request for Quotation (RFQ) management.
- Live pricing across more than 170 bunker ports.
- Electronic Bunker Delivery Note (eBDN) integration.
- Automated reconciliation of delivery data against purchase orders.
- Digital claims management with supplier performance history.
- Comprehensive audit trails and governance controls.
According to ZeroNorth, the platform has processed more than 35 million metric tonnes of bunker fuel transactions globally while reducing manual reconciliation time by up to 70%.
Carbon Costs Integrated into Purchasing Decisions
One of the platform’s key features is its ability to incorporate emissions compliance costs directly into bunker purchasing decisions. Powered by ZeroNorth’s emissions analytics engine, buyers can evaluate not only the market price of marine fuels such as VLSFO or MGO, but also the associated costs under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulations before confirming a purchase.
Supporting Decarbonization Through Digitalization
The partnership reflects a broader industry trend as shipowners increasingly adopt digital procurement and emissions-management platforms to improve cost control while meeting tightening environmental regulations.
Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from Maersk Tankers, ZeroNorth has grown into one of the maritime industry’s leading digital optimization providers. The company says its platform generates more than 3.3 million optimized voyage routes annually and helped customers collectively reduce approximately 2 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions during 2025 through operational optimization.
The integration enables procurement teams to compare offers based on total landed cost, including regulatory carbon exposure, allowing environmental compliance to become part of the commercial decision rather than a post-purchase accounting exercise.
For Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, the deployment supports the company’s broader Sail & Sustain strategy, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through operational efficiency improvements, technology investments, and the gradual adoption of alternative marine fuels.
| ZeroNorth Platform Key Metrics | Impact & Scale |
| Bunker Volume Processed | 35M+ Metric Tons (MT) |
| Global Port Coverage | 170+ Ports with Live Pricing |
| Reconciliation Efficiency | 70% Reduction in Manual Reconciliation Time |
| Fleet Voyage Optimization | 3.3M+ Routes Generated Annually |
| Verified Fleet Decarbonization | 2M Metric Tonnes of CO2 Reduced (2025) |
As carbon pricing, fuel complexity, and digital compliance continue reshaping marine fuel procurement, the partnership highlights how cruise operators are increasingly turning to data-driven platforms to improve purchasing decisions while supporting long-term sustainability objectives.
