The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to advance maritime decarbonization, digitalization, and talent development. Marking MSC’s 30th anniversary in Singapore, the partnership will focus on scaling alternative marine fuels like Bio-LNG, streamlining port operations through Just-in-Time vessel arrivals, and funding MaritimeONE youth scholarships.
Singapore | June 3, 2026 – The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Swiss container shipping giant MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company have inked a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to drive the next generation of maritime decarbonization, digital port operations, and talent cultivation.
The agreement, signed on May 25, 2026, by MPA Chief Executive Mr. Ang Wee Keong and MSC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Soren Toft, deepens the operational footprint of the world’s largest container line in the world’s premier bunkering hub. The signing also coincides with a major milestone: the 30th anniversary of MSC establishing its Asia Regional Office in Singapore.
Green Corridors and the Push for Bio-LNG
At the heart of the bilateral agreement is a concrete framework to test and scale alternative marine fuels, with a distinct operational focus on Bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane).
As a “drop-in” fuel capable of utilizing existing LNG bunkering infrastructure, Bio-LNG represents a critical pathway for MSC to shave off lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from its dual-fuel fleet. Under the MOU, both entities will explore new shipping routes, optimize vessel connectivity, and trial cutting-edge energy efficiency technologies to drive down fuel consumption across MSC’s extensive network.
