Port of Rotterdam and MPA Green Corridor

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Port of Rotterdam have signed a Cooperation Agreement to deepen their collaboration on the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor. Building on the success of this initiative since its launch in 2022, the two ports aim to further accelerate the decarbonisation and digitalisation of maritime operations. With 28 partners spanning the entire container shipping value chain, the corridor aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large container vessels by 20-30% by 2030.

Decarbonising Shipping with Sustainable Fuels

The collaboration has made significant strides in promoting the use of low- and zero-emission fuels, including bio- and e-variants of ammonia, methanol, and methane. Since 2022, several pioneering projects have been completed, including the first successful bunkering of mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane at the Port of Rotterdam, with a similar trial set for Singapore in 2025. Additionally, a Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Assessment (LCA) of green ammonia as a marine fuel has been completed, further supporting the development of sustainable marine fuel supply infrastructures.

Driving Digitalisation in Port Operations

On the digital front, the collaboration has advanced the exchange of port-to-port data, including vessel arrival and departure timestamps, to optimise vessel planning and port operations. By automating data submissions through ship-to-shore infrastructure, both ports aim to reduce time spent on port clearance, improving efficiency and reducing human error. The initiative aligns with digitalisation goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and will further refine digital solutions throughout 2025.

Key Milestones at Singapore Maritime Week 2025

At Singapore Maritime Week 2025, both MPA and the Port of Rotterdam reaffirmed their commitment to driving the future of the Green and Digital Shipping Corridor. Through public-private collaborations and industry partnerships, the two ports are setting industry standards for sustainable shipping while fostering technological innovation. As the corridor continues to grow, both ports remain committed to accelerating the adoption of green fuels and digital solutions, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry.

Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, emphasized the importance of public-private collaborations in advancing decarbonisation and digitalisation efforts. He noted, “The continued progress through the Singapore-Rotterdam Green and Digital Shipping Corridor is testament to the role of collaboration in moving ideas into impactful action on one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.”

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam, added, “By bringing together parties across the entire value chain, the Rotterdam-Singapore Green & Digital Shipping Corridor has helped to make first, valuable steps towards the decarbonisation of international shipping while also improving efficiency of trade and setting new industry standards. At the same time, we still have a lot of work ahead of us and we are looking forward to continue our work on this together with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.”

Quick Insight: The continued partnership between Singapore and Rotterdam underscores a growing global commitment to sustainable and efficient shipping. By advancing both green fuel adoption and digital innovations, the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor sets the stage for a cleaner, more efficient maritime future.
