Helsinki | January 29, 2026 – In a significant move for the global ferry sector, technology group Wärtsilä has been selected to provide a fully integrated electric propulsion package for a third high-speed catamaran ferry for Danish operator Molslinjen. This vessel is the latest addition to what is being hailed as the world’s largest maritime electrification project.
The new 129-meter vessel, like its two sister ships already under construction, will be built at the Incat Tasmania shipyard in Australia. Wärtsilä will supply the complete propulsion and energy management systems for all three vessels in the series.
Redefining the Kattegat Route
The introduction of these three battery-electric giants represents a massive leap forward for Denmark’s green transition. Operating on the busy Kattegat route, specifically connecting Aarhus-Odden and Ebeltoft-Odden, the vessels will form a “green floating bridge” between Jutland and Zealand.

Project Timeline and Investment
The total investment for the three-ship fleet and the associated onshore charging infrastructure is estimated at DKK 3.5 billion (approx. USD 510 million). The project is supported by DKK 180 million from Denmark’s national investment funds, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in high-cost maritime innovation.
