MITSUI E&S has successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test for Japan’s first methanol dual-fuel WinGD large marine engine at its Tamano Works. Scheduled for installation on a new series of domestic vessels, the advanced engine will utilize green methanol to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime operations.
Tokyo, Japan | August 3, 2026 – MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd. has announced that its group company, Mitsui E&S DU Co., Ltd., has successfully finished the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for the “DU-WinGD 6X82DF-M-1.0 LP-SCR.”
This historic milestone marks the production of the very first methanol dual-fuel WinGD large marine engine built entirely in Japan, as well as the first WinGD large marine engine manufactured at the MITSUI E&S Tamano Works.
Powering Sustainable Shipping with Green Methanol
The newly tested engine is scheduled for installation on the first vessel of a four-ship series commissioned by a domestic shipowner. By leveraging green methanol as a primary fuel source, the vessels will achieve substantial reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, directly supporting shipping’s transition toward decarbonisation.
The production was made possible through the long-standing collaboration between the MITSUI E&S Group and leading licensors Everllence and WinGD, combined with the Tamano Works’ advanced next-generation fuel supply infrastructure and its standing as Japan’s largest production facility for large marine engines.
Scaling Up Under Japan’s Revitalization Roadmap
To address the surging demand for next-generation marine propulsion systems under the Japanese government’s “Shipbuilding Industry Revitalization Roadmap,” the MITSUI E&S Group is aggressively modernizing its manufacturing infrastructure.
By streamlining integrated operations between MITSUI E&S Tamano and Mitsui E&S DU Aioi, the group is optimizing production efficiency to deliver cutting-edge technology to the global maritime sector.
