Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has received an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine to supply its MAmmoSS® ammonia fuel handling system for land-based testing of ammonia-fuelled marine engines licensed by Everllence SE and WinGD. The project supports the safe development of next-generation ammonia propulsion technologies as the shipping industry advances towards zero-emission fuels and IMO decarbonisation targets.
Tokyo | June 26, 2026 – Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has secured an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine Co., Ltd. (HZME) for its proprietary MAmmoSS® ammonia fuel handling system, marking another step forward in the commercialization of ammonia-fuelled marine propulsion technologies.
The system will be installed at HZME’s engine manufacturing facility, where it will support shop testing of ammonia-fuelled marine engines developed under licenses from two of the world’s leading marine engine designers, Everllence SE and WinGD.
Supporting next-generation ammonia engine testing
According to Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, the MAmmoSS® (Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System) will be specifically engineered to accommodate ammonia engines from both licensors, enabling HZME to conduct comprehensive land-based testing before commercial deployment.
HZME is one of the few marine engine manufacturers holding dual licenses from Everllence SE and WinGD, positioning the company to manufacture ammonia-capable engines based on both technology platforms.
The installation is expected to strengthen Japan’s growing capabilities in developing and validating ammonia-powered marine propulsion systems as shipowners prepare for the industry’s energy transition.
Integrated ammonia fuel handling solution
MAmmoSS® is an integrated ammonia fuel handling solution comprising the Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS), the Ammonia Gas Abatement System (AGAS), and centralized control equipment designed to safely manage ammonia fuel throughout engine testing and vessel operations.
Because ammonia is toxic and requires specialized handling, the system is designed to ensure safe fuel transfer, supply, monitoring and treatment of excess ammonia gas during engine operations.
Safe onboard fuel management is widely viewed as one of the critical technologies required for the large-scale adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel.
Growing demand amid shipping decarbonisation
The order comes as international shipping accelerates efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonisation strategy.
The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) adopted the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships at MEPC 80, targeting net-zero emissions from international shipping by around 2050. More recently, MEPC 83 approved mid-term GHG reduction measures aimed at supporting the sector’s transition to low- and zero-carbon fuels.
Against this backdrop, ammonia has emerged as one of the most promising next-generation marine fuels because it produces no carbon dioxide emissions during combustion.
However, its toxicity and handling characteristics require robust fuel supply and safety systems, creating increasing demand for integrated technologies such as MAmmoSS®.
Expanding ammonia solutions portfolio
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said it will continue developing safe and reliable equipment for ammonia-fuelled vessels while enhancing product functionality to meet the evolving needs of shipowners, shipbuilders and engine manufacturers.
As ammonia-powered vessels move closer to commercial deployment, integrated fuel handling systems are expected to become a critical component of future marine propulsion packages, supporting both engine testing and onboard operations.
