Matson Inc., a longstanding leader in ocean transportation, has reached an important milestone in its sustainability journey with the return of its containership, Kaimana Hila (KMH), to active service. After undergoing a major conversion to LNG propulsion, KMH is now equipped with cutting-edge green technology that significantly reduces its environmental footprint.

The vessel, now running entirely on LNG, joins its sister ship, Daniel K. Inouye (DKI), and the newly repowered Manukai in Matson’s growing fleet of LNG-powered ships. The conversion of these vessels is part of Matson’s ambitious plan to reduce Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet by 40% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This effort aligns with the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability while continuing to provide reliable and efficient service across the Pacific.

In addition to the LNG conversion, KMH has also been fitted with a new bow windshield, designed to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. This innovation will further reduce fuel consumption and emissions, reinforcing Matson’s position as a leader in environmentally conscious shipping practices.

The conversion of Manukai, which involved a complete repowering with a dual-fuel engine, mirrors the upgrades seen in both KMH and DKI. This transition to dual-fuel engines allows these vessels to operate on LNG as well as conventional marine fuels, offering greater flexibility and ensuring a reduction in carbon emissions, even when LNG is not available.

Looking ahead, Matson has placed an order for three additional Aloha Class containerships from Philly Shipyard, a significant investment in the future of green shipping. The first of these vessels, named Makua, is currently under construction and is expected to be delivered in 2026. While all three ships will be LNG-ready, they will retain the capability to operate on conventional fuels if necessary. Each vessel will be equipped with environmentally friendly features such as a fuel-efficient hull design, double-hull fuel tanks for safety, and freshwater ballast systems, enhancing their sustainability and operational efficiency.

The new vessels, like their predecessors, will continue Matson’s tradition of honoring Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage through their names. The three new ships will be named Makua, Malama, and Makena—names that hold deep historical and cultural significance in Hawaiian tradition. Makua translates to “parent” or “elder,” symbolizing strength and leadership. Malama means “to care for or protect,” reflecting Matson’s commitment to safeguarding the environment. Makena, meaning “abundance,” signifies the company’s role in supporting Hawaii and the Pacific Islands with essential goods and services.

Founded in 1882, Matson’s role as a critical lifeline for the non-contiguous economies of Hawaii, Alaska, and Guam, as well as other Pacific islands, is unparalleled. The company also operates expedited shipping services from China to Long Beach Port, California, and serves additional routes to Japan, the South Pacific, and from Alaska to Asia. Matson’s diversified fleet includes containerships, roll-on/roll-off vessels, and specialized barges, offering flexible solutions to meet the shipping needs of various industries.

Matson Logistics, a subsidiary founded in 1987, extends the company’s reach across North America and Asia, providing integrated logistics services that include rail intermodal, freight consolidation, supply chain management, and freight forwarding. The company’s dedication to sustainability and innovation continues to drive its success, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the global shipping industry.

With the introduction of LNG-powered vessels like KMH and the upcoming Aloha Class ships, Matson is poised to continue its legacy of leadership in both the maritime and environmental sectors. These efforts not only support the company’s business goals but also demonstrate a steadfast commitment to reducing the environmental impact of shipping operations, enhancing fuel efficiency, and promoting a cleaner, greener future for the maritime industry.
